The Engineering and Innovation (E&I) team at SB Energy provides technical insights and assists decision-making across all life cycle phases of renewable projects, from development, construction, and to operations and maintenance. The Innovation program ideates, evaluates, demonstrates, and deploys at-scale first-of-a-kind technologies. To that end, SB Energy operates an Innovation Center near Denver, Colorado for first-hand field demonstrations of hardware, software, and business models, such as emerging solar technologies, different types of storage, flexible compute loads, AI-based control strategies, and more.

The E&I team is seeking an engineer to assist the development, demonstration, and deployment of an intelligent energy management system (IEMS), primarily focused on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). This position offers exposure to multiple business units within the company, executives, and is an opportunity to broaden and deepen understanding of all aspects of renewable energy and influence strategic direction and business decisions.

The IEMS SCADA Engineer will:

  • Assist control and data acquisition integration of hardware, such as inverters, storage, and compute loads, at the Innovation Center and commercial plants
  • Assist development of artificial intelligence (AI) based algorithms to control hardware at the Innovation Center and commercial plants
  • Develop test plans, implement control algorithms, and oversee the tests
  • Analyze performance of control algorithms, report on the results, and recommend improvements
  • Assist deployment of effective control algorithms into commercial plants

  • Lead SCADA-related projects, including system/feature upgrades and expansions, coordinating with internal teams and external contractors to ensure timely and on-budget completion.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned

Duties and Responsibilities

Additionally, the IEMS SCADA Engineer is expected to assist with broader Innovation activities, such as:

  • Identify technologies for evaluation and ideate new opportunities based on business need
  • Evaluate the potential for technologies to increase company value, such as through performing techno-economic analyses, developing and/or running models and simulations, gathering information through first-hand interviews, field visits, and literature reviews.
  • Create presentations and present to stakeholders, including, for example, potential value of new technologies, test plans, results from field demonstrations, and more
  • Assist deployment of innovations into large-scale commercial projects

Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum four (4) years’ professional experience in engineering or technical role in renewable energy. Minimum of 5 years of experience in SCADA systems, preferably in the renewable energy sector, with a focus on solar and battery storage.

  • Knowledge of networking and cybersecurity practices related to industrial control systems.

  • Experience implementing innovations on large-scale renewable energy projects and managing small-scale field demonstrations.

  • Broad experience across new solar technologies, energy storage, or application of artificial intelligence / machine learning to renewable energy.

  • Demonstrated strong engineering, design, and communication skills, and an ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the box and solve traditional problems in new ways.
