Position Description
The Survey Field Technician works under the direction of a Party Chief, LSIT and/or Licensed Land Surveyor and prepares and follows project requirements. This position works outside extensively and can be exposed to all types of weather and outdoor conditions. This position will support our survey & engineering teams. The Survey Field technician is responsible for following the accuracy of the survey party’s assignments, making accurate measurements, and solving survey problems that may arise. This position will be expected to work well remotely with all necessary equipment, maintain survey equipment in storage and on the truck for use at each jobsite, coordinate any survey equipment maintenance, and on occasion work in the field independently. Our survey team supports public, private commercial, and industrial development projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Visit various job sites throughout the workday to record survey measurements and other descriptive data.
- Exercise some independent judgement in the field; precision and accuracy in all work; ability to follow verbal & written instructions.
- Operate surveying instruments and various tools such as electronic distance measuring equipment (robotic total stations) to collect data on a location.
- Set stakes and marks accurately to conduct a survey; search for previous survey points such as old stone markers.
- Enter the data from surveying instruments into computers, either in field or office as necessary.
- Prepare finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, ALTA surveys, corner staking, etc.
- Research existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements and right of way documents; interpret survey documents.
- May assist in maintaining field data records, survey project files and updates to systems.
- Knowledge of all field duties and responsibilities, equipment and requirements in order to help support the field team; communicate effectively with the engineering team.
- Conduct field visits and inspections at construction sites and a wide variety of outdoor locations by safely navigating all types of terrain in all weather conditions.
Minimum Work Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in field survey work utilizing various survey tools and equipment.
- Previous experience with Carlson Data Collection software, Robot Total Station/GPS, and Leica Survey Equipment a plus
- Previous experience with preparation of Subdivision Maps including Tract Maps, Parcel Maps and Records of Survey.
- Experience in setting up map sheets for map check including closures, title review and interpreting required easements and dedications.
- Previous experience in working with Party Chiefs and Survey Parties to analyze boundary establishment and processing field data.
- Experience in the preparation of ALTA Surveys and Topographic Surveys.
- Become familiar with CAD to support others in field survey crew utilizing CAD C3D 2020; analyze boundary establishment and process field data; analyzing field data and converting to a final product including plotting of utility data.
Minimum Certification and Skills Experience
- Minimum 2+ years of field experience on public and private construction staking and land development projects.
- Recent field experience in Colorado.
- Valid & current Driver’s License.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk & stand on a daily basis, for 8+ hours/day while visiting numerous job site locations.
- Ability to carry, lift, and move survey equipment around job sites; load survey equipment on and off trucks each day; equipment weighing from 5lbs – 50lbs.
- Ability to drive a vehicle to numerous job sites each workday
- Ability to work outdoors on a daily basis encounter various weather conditions and uneven terrain
- Ability to effectively & professionally communicate with all team members, clients, and contractors on job sites.
- Ability to recognize and hear approaching traffic; awareness of environmental & job site surroundings (traffic, construction equipment, etc.
- Position will require an annual physical & fitness for duty exam with hearing test.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range for position: $52,000/yr - $65,000/yr
