Job description

DataHub is an AI & Data Context Platform adopted by over 3,000 enterprises, including Apple, CVS Health, Netflix, and Visa. Innovated jointly with a thriving open-source community of 13,000+ members, DataHub’s metadata graph provides in-depth context of AI and data assets with best-in-class scalability and extensibility.

The company’s enterprise SaaS offering, DataHub Cloud, delivers a fully managed solution with AI-powered discovery, observability, and governance capabilities. Organizations rely on DataHub solutions to accelerate time-to-value from their data investments, ensure AI system reliability, and implement unified governance, enabling AI & data to work together and bring order to data chaos.

Tech Lead / Manager, Full Stack, Bay Area Hybrid

The Challenge

As AI and data products become business-critical, enterprises face a metadata crisis:

  • No unified way to track the complex data supply chain feeding AI systems
  • Engineering teams struggling with data discovery, lineage, and governance
  • Organizations needing machine-scale metadata management, not just human-browsable catalogs

The Role

We’re seeking an exceptional Tech Lead / Manager to join our engineering team and help scale DataHub’s impact across thousands of enterprises worldwide. This role combines deep technical leadership with people management to drive product excellence, engineering culture, and team growth in our mission to make data reliable and discoverable.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Architecture & Design: Lead technical architecture decisions for DataHub’s user facing products, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability for enterprise deployments
  • Hands-on Development: Contribute directly to critical features across the full stack - Java/Spring Boot backend services, React/TypeScript frontend, and Python ingestion framework where appropriate
  • Code Quality: Establish and maintain high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation across multiple programming languages and frameworks
  • Performance Optimization: Establish performance metrics and optimization strategies for complex data visualizations and interactions

Engineering Management

  • Team Building & Culture: Hire, onboard, and mentor world-class engineers while fostering a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture that balances innovation with operational excellence
  • Performance & Career Development: Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and create individual development plans aligned with company goals to help engineers grow from mid-level to senior and staff levels
  • Process & Delivery: Implement engineering processes, workflows, and best practices while ensuring teams deliver high-quality features on time
  • Release & Quality Management: Oversee regular releases, comprehensive testing strategies, and incident response for both open-source DataHub and enterprise offerings

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Product Partnership: Work closely with Product Management to translate business requirements into technical solutions and realistic delivery timelines
  • Go To Market Support: Collaborate with Customer Success and Sales Engineering teams to understand enterprise customer needs, address technical questions during pre and post sales cycles, and provide expertise for complex deployments
  • Community Engagement: Contribute to the open-source DataHub community through technical discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisions

Required Qualifications

Technical Expertise (7+ years)

  • Frontend Development: Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and modern web development practices. Proven track record of building and scaling consumer-facing web applications that handle significant user traffic
  • API Design: Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and GraphQL services for complex data applications
  • Backend Development: Expert-level proficiency in Java and Spring Boot ecosystem, with experience building scalable microservices architectures
  • Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), containerization (Docker), and familiarity with orchestration (Kubernetes)

Management Experience (3+ years)

  • Team Leadership: Proven track record of managing and growing engineering teams of 5-15 engineers
  • Hiring: Experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring top engineering talent across multiple disciplines
  • Mentorship: Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and help them advance their careers
  • Process Management: Experience implementing engineering processes, agile methodologies, and development workflows

Data Domain Knowledge

  • Data Infrastructure: Familiarity with modern data stack tools and technologies (data warehouses, ETL/ELT tools, BI platforms)
  • Enterprise Software: Experience building and scaling enterprise software products with complex deployment requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Metadata Management: Understanding of data cataloging, metadata systems, data lineage, and data governance principles
  • Open Source Experience: Contributions to major open-source projects or experience building open-source communities
  • Startup Experience: Previous experience at high-growth startups, particularly in the data or developer tools space
  • Enterprise Sales Support: Experience working with enterprise customers and supporting complex technical sales cycles
  • Data Engineering Background: Hands-on experience as a data engineer or platform engineer in data-intensive environments
  • Academic Background: Computer Science degree or equivalent technical education

If you’re passionate about technology, enjoy working with customers, and want to be part of a fast-growing company changing the industry, we want to hear from you!
