Senior Android Engineer

Job description

The Role

Are you a passionate Android Engineer eager to make a significant impact on highly visible and critical products? Do you thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment where your contributions directly shape the future of payments? If so, join our Devices and Hardware team as a Senior Android Engineer and help us revolutionize how Australian businesses accept payments.

In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation, developing the software that powers Zeller’s cutting-edge payment terminals and our exciting ‘tap to pay’ experience on mobile devices. This is a unique chance to accelerate your technical and product skillset, working on solutions that are truly essential to our customers’ success.

What You Will Do

As a Senior Android Engineer within our Kotlin-focused team, you’ll be instrumental in delivering the core functionality of Zeller’s payment platforms. Your responsibilities will include:

- Collaborate and Create: Work hand-in-hand with a cross-functional team of engineers, product managers, designers, and domain experts to build a diverse suite of software. This includes managing our Zeller terminals and crafting the seamless product experience for merchants and cardholders interacting with our payments hardware.

- Own the Lifecycle: Translate complex business and product requirements into elegant technical designs. You’ll be part of a culture that champions ownership, from hands-on implementation and robust testing through to deployment and ongoing production operation.

- Drive Excellence: Contribute to a highly collaborative team that builds and operates mission-critical payments software. We deeply value performance, uptime, and exceptional code quality, ensuring our solutions are always reliable and robust.

What You Will Bring

We’re a fast-moving startup, and our approach to software quality and technical stack is always evolving. While we don’t expect you to know everything, we are looking for:

- Deep Android Expertise: Proficiency in native application development for Android devices using Kotlin is essential.

- Technical Acumen: Familiarity with modern Android frameworks and libraries such as rxJava, Kotlin Coroutines, dependency injection (with a focus on Dagger2), and Apollo GraphQL.

- Architectural Savvy: Hands-on experience practicing CLEAN architecture, with an understanding of MVI (Model-View-Intent) being important.

- Quality First Mindset: Experience working in an environment that prioritizes software quality through automation. An understanding of how to write testable code and valuable unit tests is essential.

Beyond the technical skills, we’re looking for someone who will truly elevate our team. You’ll bring:

- Customer-Centric Drive: A growth mindset with a strong desire to work on high-impact projects, and the ability to empathize with our customers, understanding how your work directly contributes to their success.

- Collaborative Spirit: Excellent communication skills and a passion for working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional team that takes collective ownership of highly available products.

- Optimisation Focus: Experience building and optimizing software for hardware-constrained devices, or a keen interest in developing this expertise.

- Payments Passion: Prior experience in the payments industry or a genuine excitement to dive deep into this dynamic and ever-evolving sector.
