Job Description
WHAT’S THE JOB?
Fire Camps are remote camps that require rapid mobilization of staff to get to site in a variety of different locations in Northern Ontario.
Fire Camp Workers may be designated as Housekeepers, Kitchen Support or Base Camp Services and are responsible for cleaning client rooms, cleaning/stocking kitchen areas, cleaning washrooms and setting up infrastructure depending on the role that is being fulfilled.
You must be comfortable working in a remote bush camp setting. Bush camps are often hours away from any town, with limited to no cell reception and Wi-Fi. Must be comfortable sleeping in a tent and living in the outdoors as accommodations can range from a lodge to a tent depending on the site.
Key responsibilities of Housekeepers include:
- Cleaning washrooms, showers and common areas.
- Cleaning floors by sweeping & mopping.
- Gather and empty trash containers.
- Clean windows, glass partitions and mirrors.
- Making beds daily and changing linens.
- Daily linen laundry.
Key responsibilities of Kitchen Support staff include:
- Clean and maintain all kitchen areas of facilities as per cleaning schedules. This will include heavy equipment (hood and oven vents), dining area, floors, dish and cookware, and all areas of back of house operation.
- Stock and replenish food service items such as cutlery, dishes, glasses, cups, and condiments during and after all meal periods.
- Wash kitchen and service dishes.
- Assist the First Cook with the unloading and storage of all supplies and groceries.
Key responsibilities of 2nd Cooks include:
- Meet daily with the First Cook to discuss menu preparation and production strategy.
- Assist the First Cook in the preparation of all menu items as needed.
- Follow recipes, portion controls, and presentation specifications.
- Can be responsible for preparing and serving hot breakfast.
- Replenish desserts and condiment stations as required.
- Assist in the cleanliness and maintenance of the kitchen and serving areas.
- Can be responsible for assisting with baking.
- Practice correct food handling guidelines and storage procedures.
Key responsibilities of 1st Cooks include:
- Handling, preparation, production, and timely service of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in accordance with approved methods and standards.
- Preparing meals according to client scheduling and within the menu plan and budget guidelines.
- Preparing adequate quantities of the menu choices by following all production quotas set.
- Preparing food as close to consumption time as possible. Supervise all portioning of meals on serving line to ensure all clients are receiving amounts specified.
- Coordinating all kitchen staff involved in the preparation and serving of meals.
- Following proper storage and rotation of all food supplies.
Key responsibilities of Base Camp Services workers include:
- Setting Up/Dismantling mobile infrastructure.
- Maintaining and monitoring fuel levels for generators.
- Ensure and maintain safe operation of the camp.
- Monitor portable water tanker levels.
- Collect and dispose of garbage and recycling on site.
Qualifications
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- Current First Aid Level 1 certification is an asset.
- Large scale camp work experience is an asset.
- Ability to mobilize rapidly with short notice based on active fire activity.
- Valid class G Drivers License with relatively clean drivers abstract is an asset.
- Comfortable working and staying in bush camp setting.
- Ability to commit to a minimum 2 week rotation.
- Be able to handle the following physical demands:
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs.
- Climb ladders or stairs.
- Stand, walk, squat, kneel or sit according to task for extended lengths of time.
- Perform repetitive hand work requiring full use of both hands.
- Perform work with arms at full length.
- Work with arms above shoulder height.

Work schedule and remuneration:
Fire camp workers must have the ability to commit to a minimum 2 week rotation. Site locations are in remote bush settings and may require tent accommodations dependent on the location of the fire activity in the region. You may be required to work nights, weekdays, weekends, and general holidays. Wages are paid on an hourly basis and include a starting rate of $18.73 and increase dependent on position.
