Job description

This position supports the International Education Management program by facilitating collaboration on Team IEM, fostering inclusion and belonging among students and with alumni, creating meaningful programming for IEM students as scholar-practitioners, and managing administrative details. As an integral person in Team IEM, the GA will assist with agenda-setting, note-taking, and follow up from the monthly meetings with the faculty, staff, and students on Team IEM. The graduate assistant will support monthly IEM Program meetings.

Moreover, the IEM GA will work with the IEM program chair to build connections among IEM students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Activities include imagining, scheduling, organizing, and facilitating inclusive synchronous and asynchronous events such helping to create content for the IEM Newsletter, schedule and invite guest speakers, organize student and alumni meet ups at conferences, design alumni panels, and plan end of semester celebrations. The GA will also be in charge of keeping IEM communication on social media (MiCommunity, LinkedIn) vibrant and share job postings, events, and blog posts that are relevant to IEM students. As time allows, the GA may be asked to assist with writing and editing MAIEM website content, developing the MAIEM practicum website and reference materials, and assistance with general administrative work.

The IEM GA is supervised by the IEM Department Chair. Work may be done remotely and will likely be approximately 9 hours per week during the semesters with up to 140 hours available during the fall semester. The position is for the fall and spring semesters, AY 2025-2026.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: An overview of possible duties

Primary duties & responsibilities:  IEM Departmental Administrative and Program Support

  • IEM Departmental & Program Chair Support – Team IEM member, administrative support, liaison to Program Reps along with Program Chair, liaison to IEM Dept & Faculty
  • IEM/MPA Community Support Coordination (scheduling, logistics, communication)
  • Special Projects (as needed)
  • Team IEM Member - Recording of minutes, action items, and follow ups needed
  • Liaise with IEM Program Reps, Student Council Reps, Teaching Assistants, and other IEM Graduate Assistants.
  • Program communications support - newsletter, social media, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  This position is well-suited for new or continuing IEM or IEM/MPA students. Applicants will receive guidance and mentoring on strategies to fulfill the above-mentioned roles and responsibilities.

  • Experience with designing and facilitating inclusive online and in-person events.

  • Familiarity with gathering and sharing community feedback for continuous improvement.

  • Interest in working closely with IEM faculty, staff, and students to support success.

  • Familiarity with the professional, academic, and policy fields of international education.

  • Experience in social media and online communication strategies.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Aware of their own perspective and adept at reflecting upon their own biases and those of others.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Pursuing an IEM degree or MPA/IEM joint degrees.

  • Enrolled as a student during the AY 2025-2026.

  • Strong oral and written communication and reporting skills.

  • A strong commitment to building an inclusive learning environment in IEM and to fostering belonging.

  • A passion and creativity for designing and facilitating online and in-person events to connect the IEM community throughout the semester and for special activities and events.

  • Adept at working independently and remotely, managing tasks, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders to advance projects, with evidence of some prior project management experience.

  • Candidates must be based in the U.S. per HR hiring regulations.

  • Applicants must be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion throughout the duration of the research assistantship.

  • Competent with technologies including Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Zoom, and other technologies used at MIIS.

SCHEDULE AND LOGISTICS:

Regular synchronous and asynchronous communications, over Zoom and email, and independent research or project work are part of the responsibilities of this role. The GA will follow institutional policies and guidelines for remote work.

Days per week:  1-2 days/week Mon-Fri. Days and hours are flexible during business hours, a weekly schedule will be established collaboratively.

Hours per week & Salary:  approx. 9 hours/week at $16.50/hr – per approved MIIS GRA rate

Timeframe: Position to begin August, 2025 and will continue through Fall ‘25 semester, with the possibility that position may be extended in Spring 2026 (funding dependent, TBD)

Supervisor:  Dr. David Wick, IEM Program Chair and Associate Professor
