Senior Frontend Software Engineer, Simulation

Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driverβ€”The World’s Most Experienced Driverβ„’β€”to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

The Triage Workflow Tooling and Automation team develops the tooling and infrastructure to support human evaluated and automated triage operations for a variety of stakeholders and workstreams across Waymo. The data produced by these workstreams is used to evaluate and improve the performance of the Waymo driver.

In this hybrid role, you will be reporting to an Engineering Director.

You will:

  • Design, develop, test, and optimize scalable, data-rich Angular applications using Typescript and modern development techniques.
  • Build and maintain the tools and infrastructure to support waymo’s scaling Triage and Labeling operations.
  • Implementing features that streamline user workflows and improve the efficiency of human triagers.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, UX Designers and other stakeholders to translate requirements into sustainable technical solutions.
  • Develop infrastructure and front-end components to render simple, accurate, and easy-to-understand visualizations, such as tables, maps, and charts, based on labeled and processed data to facilitate quicker insights and decision-making.

You have:

  • Demonstrated track record of designing and delivering complex, scalable, and performant frontend applications.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and modern web development frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Vue)
  • Strong understanding of web development fundamentals including HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative, user-centric, approach to working with cross-functional teams (Product, UX, Operations).
  • Proven ability to design, develop, test, and maintain robust user interfaces.
  • 5+ years of experience with data visualization libraries and techniques (e.g., charting, mapping, tabular data presentation).

We prefer:

  • Experience developing human-in-the-loop (HITL) or human review systems.
  • Familiarity or experience with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, robotics, or a related domain.
  • Prior experience with large-scale data labeling platforms or data annotation tools.
  • Understanding of backend system design, APIs, and developing integrated systems.
  • Contributions to open-source projects and/or a strong personal project portfolio demonstrating relevant skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment, in a self-guided manner.
