Job description

Agile Six is a people-first, remote-work company that serves shoulder-to-shoulder with federal agencies to find innovative, human-centered solutions. We build better by putting people first. We are animated by our core values of Purpose, Wholeness, Trust, Self-Management and Inclusion. We deliver our solutions in autonomous teams of self-managed professionals (no managers here!) who genuinely care about each other and the work. We know that’s our company’s purpose – and that we can only achieve it by supporting a culture where people feel valued, self-managed, and love to come to work.

The Role

We are seeking a Senior Fullstack (Frontend Focused) Engineer with experience working on VA.gov to serve as a Digital Forms & Workflow Engineer to build Veteran‑facing digital forms and multi‑party workflows. You will craft intuitive, accessible, production‑ready digital forms on the VA.gov platform, integrate with the Benefits Intake API and the VA’s Central Mail Portal, and ensure every submission is secure, validated, and CMP‑compliant. The small cross-functional team performing this work will be leveraging AI and other innovative tools and processes to attempt to dramatically shrink the time it takes to deliver digital forms in the VA ecosystem. As a result, we are looking for people who not only have deep engineering expertise and experience with the VA ecosystem, but also bring extraordinary productivity, systems level thinking, and an experimental mindset to extremely hard challenges.

You will be working primarily in the following open source github repository:

And integrating with backend systems defined in the following open source repository and elsewhere:

Scope of Work

  • Build digital forms within VA.gov using VA Design System and the VA forms system
  • Generate PDFs/JSON while ensuring data integrity
  • Integrate with vets‑api submission endpoints and coordinate data flow with back‑end teams.
  • Implement complex validations, conditional logic, accessibility compliance (WCAG 2.1 / Section 508), and privacy controls around PII.
  • Design multi‑party workflows (e.g., employers, medical providers) that seamlessly feed Veteran and Family Member submissions.
  • Identify and evaluate potential solutions quickly, then implement them effectively with a high degree of quality.
  • Ensure privacy around form elements and data that contain PII.
  • Write automated tests (Cypress, Playwright, axe, pa11y) for form logic, validations, PDF/JSON integrity, and accessibility.

Responsibilities

  • This role centers on crafting UI components, generating PDFs, and integrating with back-end APIs, using various frameworks and architectures to thoughtfully integrate advanced features. This is a hands-on coding role.
  • In this role, you’ll work with small, fast-working team that will leverage AI and other innovative tools and workflows, along with systems thinking and a willingness to explore alternative approaches, to improve the design, implementation, and deployment of digital forms.
  • You will use your experience with front-end frameworks and the VA ecosystem to solve technical challenges, design effective solutions, troubleshoot production issues, and improve system performance.
  • You’ll apply your experience to make informed architectural decisions, using design patterns and best practices to maintain quality through code reviews and metrics.
  • Your experience with the VA.gov ecosystem as well as exposure to other systems will help you make effective choices for architecture and scalability, supporting smoother workflows and enhancing the development process.
  • You will bring experience with security best-practices to ensure that PII is handled responsibly and securely, implement secure data collection, transmission, storage, and access controls, proactively identify and mitigate risks, and champion privacy compliance throughout the development lifecycle.
  • We value teamwork, proactive knowledge sharing and mentorship. In this role, you’ll support colleagues through code reviews and pair programming, helping to strengthen their skills and improve code quality. You’ll also communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams to foster a collaborative environment.
  • We expect this role and the responsibilities associated with it to grow and change over time. We value agility, and count on your ability to adapt and grow your skills as the team and needs of the project evolve.
  • Support the practice of engineering within the organization as needed, through activities such as help with recruitment and hiring, code challenges, and participating in our community of practice.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience as a software engineer with a focus on front-end frameworks.
  • 4 + years of recent experience with React and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • At least one year of experience building products and services within the VA.gov ecosystem, ideally involving digital forms.
  • Expertise with the VA Design System.
  • Demonstrated self‑management and ownership of your work.
  • Demonstrated history of bringing a combination of initiative, pragmatism, creativity and tenacity to solve hard problems.
  • Ability to work independently on high complexity tasks, and to collaborate as it makes sense for the problem and the work.
  • Deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1, Section 508) and automated testing tools (Cypress, Playwright, axe, pa11y).
  • Thrive in Agile, self‑organizing environments focused on team success.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team, including research, design, engineering, and product.
  • Has lived and worked in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years.
  • Some of our clients may request or require travel from time to time. If this is a concern for you, we encourage you to apply and discuss it with us at your initial interview.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with vets‑json‑schema.
  • Experience designing PDF/JSON outputs; familiarity with the PDFFill library.
  • Node.js or Python for workflow service APIs; Ruby on Rails a plus.
  • Proficiency with Cypress or Playwright integrated into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Development experience in cloud environments (AWS, Azure).
  • Expertise in CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
  • Experience experimenting with and/or utilizing AI tools and services to create and deliver software, and a strong willingness to leverage AI where appropriate to improve outcomes.
  • You are a U.S. Veteran. As a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, we recognize the transition to civilian life can be tricky, and welcome and encourage Veterans to apply.

At Agile Six, we are committed to building teams that represent a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. Even if you don’t meet every requirement, we encourage you to apply. We’re eager to meet people who believe in our mission and who can contribute to our team in a variety of ways.
