In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible to build, lead, and manage a team of software professionals, including Principal Engineers, SW. Architects, Software Engineers, Associate Engineers, as well as Scrum Masters. The right candidate will develop strategies for the embedded SW development environment, including goals and plans in alignment with the group’s development objectives. They will organize and lead scrum team events (with the help of the Scrum Master), foster a collaborative and motivated work environment, and enable and support data-driven decision-making. In addition, they will provide mentorship, guidance, and career development opportunities to team members.

This is a highly technical role, focused on using embedded SW development experience to successfully manage this team.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the team members, ensuring that best SW development practices are followed, and technical challenges are effectively addressed.
  • Develop and present SW development status reports, highlighting accomplishments, challenges, and risks.
  • Strategize and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure successful SW development outcomes.
  • Uphold and promote the company’s culture, values, and standards within the team. Create an inclusive and positive working environment where every team member can thrive.
  • Lead a geographically dispersed team, promoting effective communication, collaboration, and alignment across locations.
  • Drive SW automation initiatives and champion quality assurance practices to enhance software development processes and product reliability.
  • Organize team-building events, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions to foster team cohesion and professional growth.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of management experience in a software development environment, preferably with embedded software focus.
  • Strong background in embedded software development and proficiency in Agile methodologies.
  • Proven leadership skills with a track record of building and managing successful software development teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration and team motivation.
  • Technical expertise in software engineering practices, including design, development, and testing.
  • Experience working with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Familiarity with automation practices and quality assurance methods.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficiency in working with both public and private cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with CloudOps and FinOps practices.
  • Familiarity with setting up and managing CI/CD pipelines.

DECISION MAKING & SUPERVISION:

  • In this role, the individual will wield substantial influence over the trajectory of the Telesat LightSpeed program. They will be responsible for talent acquisition, fostering a constructive work atmosphere, and leveraging their extensive expertise to inform recommendations and decisions.
  • This position entails overseeing both direct and matrixed reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Working conditions are generally comfortable typical of an office environment.
  • international travel is required.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP).
