We are seeking a dynamic leader to direct our regulatory affairs strategy and team. The Director of Regulatory Affairs will help commercialize and grow our pioneering clean energy programs through a mix of strategic planning, consultative engagement, and thought leadership across legislative and regulatory proceedings, and commercial opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Regulatory Affairs will dictate our regulatory strategy, policy positions, and advocacy activity and grow and manage our Regulatory Affairs team. They will evangelize industry knowledge within the company, represent EnergyHub in regulatory proceedings and at conferences and industry events, engage with key strategic clients to provide regulatory support, and identify and shape market opportunities that emerge as a result of regulatory and policy changes.

What you will do

  • Lead EnergyHub’s Regulatory Affairs team
  • Establish and execute the North American regulatory and legislative engagement strategies for the company
  • Prioritize the highest-leverage advocacy opportunities and initiatives related to grid modernization, integrated resource planning, demand-side management, transportation electrification, energy storage, rate cases, state and federal legislation and grant programs, and more
  • Interface closely with EnergyHub’s Utility Sales and Client Success teams to deliver high levels of commercial support and intelligence on key regulatory issues affecting EnergyHub’s clients
  • Participate in integrated resource planning/VPP potential study/distribution system planning cycles to promote the use of demand-side resources and virtual power plants in long-term grid planning
  • Educate regulators and advocate for the role of software and DERMS in facilitating demand flexibility through innovative utility-led programs and rates
  • Represent EnergyHub as a thought leader in electric vehicle program design to ensure that managed charging programs are set up to monetize the full grid value of EV assets
  • Harvest best practices from battery storage demand response programs to drive the development of energy storage incentive and load management programs
  • Track national and state-level regulatory trends and periodically brief senior leadership and internal stakeholders to enable product roadmap planning
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to evaluate new business models or program ideas in response to federal or state-level policy initiatives
  • Research and gain expertise in regulatory topics with the potential to accelerate the adoption of grid-edge resources and the programs that harness them (e.g., performance-based ratemaking, software capitalization, technical resource manuals and M&V protocols)
  • Foster productive relationships with EnergyHub’s trade associations and represent EnergyHub at industry conferences
  • Work with Product Marketing to create thought leadership materials such as blog posts and white papers in support of policy positions - identify and onboard outside consultants to craft positions and advocacy materials where appropriate
  • Expectation of frequent work travel
  • Other duties as assigned

In short you will play a crucial role in our commercial success. You will develop and lead a regulatory team tracking state regulatory and legislative developments and will engage closely with regulators, utility experts, stakeholder groups, staff, and trade organizations. You and your team will elevate the stature and perceived effectiveness of demand-side solutions and DER flexibility across regulatory and legislative proceedings. And you will work directly with our outside sales team, engaging directly with clients and prospects to shape contracts and opportunities to land new clients and expand existing customer relationships.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with deep knowledge of utility regulatory affairs, energy markets and policy, utility IRP processes, DSM evaluation and reporting, demand response and EV programs and program design, and virtual power plants
  • Proven ability to build deep relationships with regulators, legislators, and decision-makers overseeing utility DSM, EV, and VPP programs
  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience, including in a similar role within utility regulatory affairs at a leading DR, DSM, or edge DERMS provider, DER OEM or aggregator,  multi-state utility, or trade organization

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in public policy or a Juris Doctorate (JD)
  • Proven ability to understand hurdles and develop commercial strategies for new markets
  • Additional experience and demonstrated thought leadership or program design in one or more of the following: Utility rate design, energy efficiency savings and cost accounting, demand management, beneficial electrification, or building electrification

The salary range of this opportunity is listed below and is determined within a range based on factors including qualifications, location and experience.  This allows opportunity for growth and development within the role.  The salary offered is part of a total compensation package.

$160,000—$180,000 USD
