Senior Director of Engineering

Job description

About us:

Outliant is a fully-remote, US-based, digital product development and startup consulting company, with a team of culturally diverse creators whose exceptional skills and talents help conceive seamless digital products. Our teams exhibit work-play energy that supports individual growth, as well as encourages the freedom of creativity and “thinking outside the box.”

Our Core Values:

Pursuit of Excellence: We are extremely competitive, ambitious, and driven to be exceptional – as individuals, teams, and as an organization. There is no standard high enough and we will never settle. We aspire to attract, retain, and empower the very best people.

Startup Mentality: Outliant began with 5 startup founders, and startup culture is deep in our DNA. It’s a critical advantage that allows us to move faster, be more resourceful, and empower our team at all levels. We are in the early chapters of our journey.

World-Class Remote Collaboration: Outliant is (and always has been) a 100% remote company – we have no offices and our teams are distributed around the world. Given the freedom and autonomy this provides, we require that our people excel in this remote structure.

About the role:

As a Senior Director of Engineering, you will assume a critical leadership role, responsible for guiding multiple engineering teams and shaping the technical strategy for key areas of our business. You will bridge the gap between high-level vision and tactical execution, empowering your managers and their teams to deliver exceptional results.

With your blend of deep technical expertise, strategic foresight, and proven leadership, you will drive complex, cross-functional engineering initiatives and foster a culture of innovation and excellence. This is a chance to make a significant impact on our products, scale our engineering practices, and mentor the next generation of technical leaders.

Seniority Level: Director

Responsibilities:

Team Management and Development

  • Team Leadership: Lead, manage, and scale multiple high-performing engineering teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, ownership, and technical excellence across your entire department.

  • People Management: Oversee the hiring, performance reviews, and career development for engineers and engineering managers, ensuring team members have clear growth paths and the mentorship needed to succeed.

  • Performance Management: Own the performance management process for your domain, setting ambitious goals, providing constructive feedback, and driving a continuous improvement mindset among managers and individual contributors.

Project and Process Oversight

  • Project Management: Ensure that cross-team dependencies and strategic roadblocks are identified and resolved with urgency, maintaining momentum on large-scale initiatives.

  • Alignment with Company Goals: Balance the needs of your teams with the company’s broader strategic objectives, aligning technical roadmaps with business goals and identifying opportunities to scale processes and improve efficiency.

  • Metrics Analysis: Define, analyze, and report on key performance metrics for your department, leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and communicate progress to executive leadership.

Strategic Development

  • Technical Strategy Development: Co-develop and execute a comprehensive technical strategy that aligns with the product vision and overall business goals, ensuring the long-term health and scalability of our systems.

  • Innovative Solutions Identification: Identify, champion, and lead the implementation of innovative technical solutions to tackle complex architectural and business challenges, driving a forward-thinking engineering culture.

Workload and Resource Management

  • Technical Workload Management: Manage and prioritize the technical workload across multiple teams, ensuring efficient resource allocation and effective development practices that meet strategic deadlines.

  • Budget and Resource Allocation: Oversee the budget, headcount planning, and resource allocation for your department, ensuring optimal use of resources to achieve project goals and financial targets.

Problem-Solving and Communication

  • Proactive Problem-Solving: Anticipate and proactively address potential architectural and organizational roadblocks, empowering your managers and teams to solve problems independently while providing strategic guidance.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including executive leadership, translating complex technical strategies and trade-offs into clear business impact.

Continuous Improvement

  • Technology Trends Monitoring: Stay current on the latest technologies and industry trends, evaluating and implementing solutions to enhance development processes, team performance, and overall organizational effectiveness.

Requirements:

  • Possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field; a Master’s degree is a plus.

  • Has 8+ years of software development experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity. Proven experience managing other engineering managers is required.

  • Mastery of a broad range of technical skills and deep expertise in system architecture, design patterns, and building scalable, distributed systems.

  • Hands-on experience with agile development methodologies and DevOps practices, with a track record of scaling these practices across multiple teams.

  • Strong familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Exceptional leadership skills with a proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop other managers, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.

  • Demonstrated success in managing large-scale, complex, cross-functional projects from inception to completion.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to develop innovative solutions for ambiguous and complex challenges.

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to translate business goals into a clear technical strategy and roadmap.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to both technical and executive audiences.

  • Significant experience in budget management, resource planning, and cost optimization for multiple teams or a department.

  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies and drive change and process improvements within a growing organization.
