AI Engineer

at Rye

Job description

About Rye:

Rye is a seed-stage startup with an amazing founding team that includes Justin Kan, co-founder of Twitch, and founders from Reddit and Goldman Sachs.

We have spent the last couple of years developing APIs that integrate with platforms/marketplaces like Shopify, Amazon, and more. We are now iterating those APIs to help AI agentic solutions transact natively on those platforms and on many other stores online, unlocking true direct checkout from within their flows.

Any product online becomes available for instant purchase, all without leaving the agentic experience, whether it’s an interactive prompt, like ChatGPT or Perplexity, or a fully autonomous backend AI workflow.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a Senior / Staff AI Engineer to join our remote-first team. We have a base in NYC, where part of the team works together a few days a week, but most of the team is spread out.

You will be responsible for significantly contributing to the development of a cutting-edge browser agent, that solves different aspects of checkout in a modular way, securely and reliably ensuring transaction success. You will also be responsible for architecting a system that uses AI to build fault-tolerant repeatable checkout workflows.

You’ll be coordinating features across teams and systems, ensuring fast iterative product development with one-week sprints. You’ll be expected to communicate updates proactively and work independently.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a high-quality browser agent, utilizing advanced techniques to produce reliable and reusable automation from arbitrary ecommerce examples.

  • Lead the creation and tuning of a model that focuses on the checkout process.

  • Architect and implement the infrastructure that runs our agentic solution.

  • Coordinating features across team members and systems and communicate proactively.

  • Work independently and with a remote-first team.

  • Keep abreast of all relevant agentic advances and be the expert in the team on AI.

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience in backend/AI engineering.

  • Proven professional experience building LLM or NLP applications.

  • Deep understanding of related techniques: fine-tuning, multi-step reasoning agent development, text processing, semantic extraction, machine translation.

  • Experience with designing evals and building tight experiment loops.

  • Deep understanding of browser internals and automation techniques.

  • Bonus skill: knowledge of fraud detection solutions in ecommerce.

  • High proficiency in Python.

  • Strong understanding of best practices in software development and engineering.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.

  • Great technical writer.

At Rye, we offer a highly competitive salary and benefits package. We’re well-funded with several years of runway and funding from a16z. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to join a fast-paced, remote-first startup and have tons of autonomy and ownership in their work.
