Open Philanthropy’s Immigration & Global Workforce team ensures that we can hire and support mission-aligned staff from across the globe, while managing complex immigration and employment logistics with care, clarity, and responsiveness. As our team continues to expand, we’re looking for a new team member to help us sustain and improve the systems that make this possible.

Open Philanthropy is a philanthropic funder and advisor; our mission is to help others as much as we can with the resources available to us. We stress openness to many possibilities and have chosen our focus areas based on importance, neglectedness, and tractability. Our current giving areas include potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence, global health and development, scientific research, global public health policy, farm animal welfare, and biosecurity and pandemic preparedness. In 2024, we recommended $650 million to high-impact causes, and we’ve recommended over $4 billion in grants since our formation.

About the role

You will join a three-person team focused on business immigration and global employment support, reporting to team lead Martin McDonald, who leads our Immigration & Global Workforce function.

Our long-term vision is to continually improve our infrastructure and support capacity, while maintaining high standards for service and finding thoughtful, creative ways to evolve our systems.

As part of this team, you’ll help ensure that Open Philanthropy can hire and support global talent — including staff employed internationally or interested in relocating to the U.S. — while handling complex legal, regulatory, and operational matters with care and clarity.

Your core responsibilities would include:

Immigration support

  • Own and support employment-based green card and other long-term U.S. immigration processes. This includes coordinating with outside counsel, employees, and managers; outlining relevant case factors; initiating and tracking cases; and ensuring timely, smooth progression.

  • Contribute to long-term immigration strategy and planning. This includes monitoring case timelines, identifying upcoming sponsorship needs, and supporting clear, proactive communication with employees and managers.

  • Provide support for nonimmigrant visa (NIV) matters as needed. This includes case preparation, coordination with external counsel, and guidance for employees and hiring managers.

  • Collaborate on improvements to immigration documentation, policies, and guidance, with a focus on clarity, consistency, and accessibility for employees and managers.

Employer of Record (EOR) support

  • Help manage global employment logistics for international staff employed through an EOR. This includes drafting and managing employment contracts, responding to employee questions, and ensuring a positive onboarding and ongoing experience.

  • Support process improvements related to EOR hiring and management. This includes updating documentation, streamlining onboarding workflows, and helping ensure consistent and compliant practices across countries.

  • Contribute to internal planning and decision-making around international employment policies such as benefits, paid time off, payroll, or other elements of the employee experience — especially in regions with significant team presence.

  • Partner with other People Operations staff to ensure smooth transitions between recruitment and onboarding for staff employed through an EOR.

Additional areas

  • Identify and contribute to process improvements across immigration and EOR systems, including opportunities to clarify decision-making processes or improve documentation and tooling.

  • Pitch in on special projects or team-wide priorities. We’re always looking for ways to improve our systems and practices to better support Open Philanthropy’s mission.

That said, it’s hard to predict everything you might do — we’re a growing organization, and expect all staff to be flexible about what they work on and put contributing to our mission first.

Who might be a good fit

We’re looking for someone who resonates with Open Philanthropy’s culture and values, and is excited to take ownership of providing excellent support on both immigration and global employment matters.

Our ideal candidate would bring significant prior experience with business immigration — particularly employment-based green card cases — and familiarity with global employment support through an Employer of Record (EOR) arrangement. However, we’re open to shaping the role based on a candidate’s strengths. For example, someone with deep green card experience and a sincere interest in expanding into EOR work could be a great fit.

Overall, you might be a great fit for this work if you:

  • Are a seasoned immigration or global employment professional. You have at least 3 years of relevant experience working on PERM-based green card cases (recruitment, I-140s, adjustment of status), and ideally international employment logistics (onboarding, contracts, benefits, or payroll coordination through an EOR). Experience supporting U.K.-based people is a plus, given the number of team members located there.

  • Work in a way that reflects our operating values of ownership, openness, calibration, and inclusiveness.

  • Communicate clearly and thoughtfully. You’ll need to manage a high volume of email, explain nuanced issues to employees and managers, and serve as a liaison with outside counsel or vendors.

  • Are organized and detail-oriented. The day-to-day work involves time-sensitive processes and high-stakes decisions. We need someone who can track next steps across many cases without letting things fall through the cracks.

  • Are reliable, responsive, and calm under pressure. Employees and managers rely on this team for timely guidance, so it’s important to manage competing priorities and respond with care and clarity.

  • Are familiar with or interested in Open Phil’s mission. Familiarity with our causes and fields in which relevant work is done — such as global health policy, biosecurity, and reducing risks from advanced AI — is a plus, but not required.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many of the skills and experiences described above. However, there is no such thing as a “perfect” candidate. Role details & benefits

  • Compensation: The baseline compensation for this role is $116,977.12, which would be distributed as a base salary of $101,719.24 and an unconditional 401(k) grant of $15,257.89 for U.S. hires.

    • These compensation figures assume a remote location; there would be geographic adjustments upwards for candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington, D.C.

    • All compensation will be distributed in the form of take-home salary for internationally-based hires.

  • Time zones and location: You can work remotely. While we are not able to sponsor visas for this role, we are open to hires outside the U.S. able to consistently overlap with U.S. business hours.

  • Benefits: Our benefits package includes:

    • Excellent health insurance (we cover 100% of premiums within the U.S. for you and any eligible dependents) and an employer-funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement for certain other personalhealth expenses.

    • Four weeks of PTO recommended per year.

    • Four months of fully paid family leave.

    • Support for remote work — we’ll cover a remote workspace outside your home if you need one, or connect you with an Open Phil coworking hub in your city.

    • We can’t always provide every benefit we offer U.S. staff to international hires, but we’re working on it (and will usually provide cash equivalents of any benefits we can’t offer in your country).

  • Start date: We expect to make offers by mid-August, and hope new hires can start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though we understand that some candidates may need longer to exit existing commitments.
