About Coefficient Giving
We were founded in 2014, formerly known as Open Philanthropy. We are a philanthropic funder and advisor, working with donors to make their giving more effective. Since we started, we have directed over $4 billion in grants.
We research areas where funding can have the most impact. We also provide strategic advice and operational support to other philanthropists.
Our grantmaking focuses on several areas: Science and Global Health R&D (e.g., vaccine development, water chlorination), Abundance & Growth (e.g., supporting research replication), Farm Animal Welfare (e.g., promoting cage-free practices), and AI risk reduction (e.g., funding technical AI safety research and policy). We also serve as outsourced foundation staff for our founding and primary partner.
Mission & Values
Our mission is to help others as much as possible with the resources we have. This means learning how to make philanthropy most effective at improving lives and then directing grants to maximize that effect.
Our core operating values, which we expect from every hire, are:
- Ownership: Take broad responsibility and approach tasks critically.
- Openness: Constantly seek, incorporate, and share new information. Provide direct feedback.
- Calibration: Communicate clearly about what you know and don’t know. Impartially assess the impact of your work.
- Inclusiveness: Ensure a flexible work environment where people from all backgrounds can do their best work.
Beyond these values, we look for individuals who are passionate about our mission, can tackle difficult, open-ended projects, and are excited to contribute to a growing organization.
Team & Culture
We have 51-200 employees. Our team comes from diverse backgrounds but shares a common commitment to our mission. Our culture is casual and approachable. We encourage open communication and a high-feedback environment at all levels.
Our employees think through complex issues and take concrete action to address them. As our grantmaking grows, we continuously refine our workflows, data infrastructure, and knowledge management to improve efficiency.
Many of our team members work remotely. We have permanent offices in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and co-working spaces in New York City, London, and Boston. Staff outside San Francisco usually travel to an office 2-4 times a year.
We offer flexible working hours, allowing you to largely decide when to work throughout the day. We also promote sustainable workloads by defining full-time employment as 35-40 hours of focused work per week.
Inclusiveness is a core value for us. We use identity-blinded work tests, proactively reach out to underrepresented communities, offer transparent compensation, and keep application requirements minimal to encourage diverse applicants.
Benefits & Perks
We offer full health, dental, and vision coverage. We pay all premiums for staff and their families in the U.S. This includes mental health benefits and an employer-funded Health Reimbursement Arrangement.
We provide an ergonomic benefit to cover costs for equipment like standing desks or supportive chairs.
Paid time off is flexible, but we encourage employees to take about 20 days per year, in addition to 16 days off for holidays. We offer up to 16 weeks of paid parental leave, bereavement leave, and options for unpaid leave.
We give an unconditional 401(k) grant equal to 15% of salaries, up to $23,000 annually. Employees can expense tools and services that boost productivity, such as software and supplementary childcare.
Our family formation benefit helps cover expenses for fertility treatment, surrogacy, or adoption. Our continual learning policy covers professional development costs.
For remote work, we offer a remote workspace allowance or access to coworking hubs. We may provide cash-equivalent benefits for international hires where possible. Relocation and visa-related cost support are available for eligible candidates.
