Job description
Trellis is a profitable, fast-growing Series A startup backed by top investors like General Catalyst, QED, NYCA, and Amex Ventures.
Our mission: make shopping for home and auto insurance faster, smarter, and easier for everyday Americans. Powered by ML and GenAI, we help people find better insurance — saving them time, money, and stress.
We’re fully remote, built for speed, and led by a third-time fintech founder with a track record of building public companies.
If you move fast, take ownership, and care about your craft, you’ll thrive here.
About the role
Trellis is looking for an experienced Controller to assume responsibility for the company’s financial accounting and operations.
This is an opportunity to step into a high-ownership role at a fast growing insurance technology company. You will own day-to-day accounting, plus financial operations, reporting and compliance, establishing Trellis as a best-in-class financial operator. Trellis is venture-backed but comfortably cash flow positive as of 2024 and our operations are adapting to reflect that reality.
Importantly, the Controller is expected to be a strategic driver of the business. This will include surfacing financial insights and opportunities to senior management, managing the company’s cash and working capital position as a means for growth, and assisting with financial forecasting.
Trellis is a lean, entrepreneurial organization. We have a small team and in this role you will work closely with financial leadership (Chief Business Officer) and our outsourced bookkeepers to deliver against your objectives.
In this role, expect to
- Orchestrate and manage financial operations and processes that are accurate, simple and seamless
- Refine Trellis’ accounting practices, policies and procedures to maintain compliance with financial reporting standards and keep a generally pristine set of books
- Deliver highly accurate, timely and insightful financial reporting
- Support the budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes
- Upgrade Trellis’ cash management, liquidity and working capital practices, transforming them into a strategic lever for the business
- Run point on any audits or quality of earnings assessments
- Ensure the business is compliant with all tax requirements, and deliver strategies for effectively managing our tax liabilities
To succeed in this role, you have
- Minimum 6 years professional experience
- CPA designation
- Professional accounting firm experience
- Experience in a mid- to senior-level accounting role at a high growth operating company (ideally you are already a controller in a similar environment)
- Independently led an audit or QoE process for a private company
- Had exposure to multi-entity accounting, ideally having worked directly in a business with multiple entities and intercompany cash requirements
- Analytical horsepower to interpret our financials to understand key drivers and changes in our business
- Strategic business acumen to identify opportunities for improvement in our business
- Ability to independently craft work plans and execute against them for 3-4 weeks at a time
- Low ego and a willingness to roll up your sleeves
Nice to have, but not essential
- Been through an M&A process (not a hard requirement)
- Had exposure to insurance technology in another role
You can address your application to Scott. In your response to what gets you excited about the role, use the final bullet to tell me your favorite mathematical constant and list the first five digits after the decimal.
