Your Role
The Director of Data Engineering will play a pivotal role tasked with shaping and executing the Honest data architecture vision, strategy, and growth trajectory. This position will hold primary responsibility for the seamless acquisition, integration, management, and delivery of diverse healthcare data sources crucial to our operations.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive expertise as a healthcare data architect, with a focus on designing and implementing interoperability, cloud data warehousing, and analytical solutions. This candidate will be instrumental in driving innovation, ensuring scalability, and optimizing the performance of our data infrastructure to meet evolving needs.
The Director of Data Engineering will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to align data initiatives with business objectives. A strong emphasis is placed on fostering a culture of excellence in customer satisfaction, whereby technical solutions not only meet but exceed expectations.
Primary Functions of the Director, Data Engineering Include:
- Build the strategy to acquire and maintain data with a high level of fidelity in the enterprise data warehouse while ensuring efficient use of resources to meet organizational service levels.
- Own the architecture of data warehouse design along with the overall data integration landscape.
- Lead data engineering and other team members in developing applicable methodologies, tools, and approaches for client delivery.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of data warehousing and data management delivery.
- Lead the data acquisition and integration of data into the enterprise data lake or warehouse platform from various sources including EMR, HIE, etc.
- Develop and implement data lifecycle management strategies, including data governance, data quality, data integration, and data security, to ensure the availability, accuracy, and reliability of data assets.
- Coordinate with the data science manager and product managers to deliver cohesive product roadmaps and client implementations.
- Own the processes and policies related to data access, data sharing, and data usage, ensuring the integrity and quality of data used for clinical and administrative purposes.
- Evolve capabilities to help the business find opportunities to serve more patients through strategic technology investments and the use of data for the generation of meaningful insights.
- Leverage your expertise in working with healthcare data and collaborate with customers on data integration processes, project prioritizations, and deadlines while improving quality and efficiency.
- Establish standards to ensure that communication to the customers regarding the status of implementation projects occurs in a consistent manner and on a regular basis.
- Build and manage a high performing on-shore and off-shore engineering teams from the technical and people perspectives.
- Design and develop integrated test plans relevant to interface implementations.
- Build the API and electronic data interchange (EDI) technology operations and support client integration and data submission.
- Work efficiently and effectively across multiple functional teams and manage multiple priorities.
- Determine data and integration priorities in conjunction with enterprise data warehouse governance structure, assisting in developing any plans necessary to resolve resource issues during both project planning and implementation.
- Develop and maintain data warehouse documentation, including data dictionaries, database diagrams, analytics diagrams, integrations, and code.
- Hire, train, and mentor top talent, while fostering a culture of curiosity where initiative and performance are rewarded.
- Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or a related field
- 10+ years of experience in information technology with a minimum of 5 years leading a data warehouse and data engineering role or department
- 10+ years of proven technical skills in Python, developing cloud services in AWS, batch processing, databases, developed scalable data-driven platforms, third-party API integrations (e.g. with EHR systems)
- 7+ years of leadership/management experience
- 5+ years of healthcare experience
- 3+ years of experience in cloud-based data platforms like AWS, Azure & analytical data warehouse like snowflake or redshift
- Expertise in healthcare standards like FHIR, HL7, master data management, data warehousing, coding languages and ontologies
- Experience with Talend data management preferred
- Excellent knowledge of data integration programs involving all components including source systems, ETL, API implementation, data quality/integrity, database and delivery mechanisms, and EDI business processes, practices and procedures within a healthcare environment
- Exceptional ability to manage multiple projects across functional teams in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and an ability to provide recommendations on data integrations and applications
- Strategic, conceptual and analytical thinking and decision-making skills
- Ability to advise on complex technical matters to all stakeholders; ability to communicate effectively with senior management and individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization
- Ability to build teams and generate a spirit of cooperation while coordinating diverse activities and groups; people management and negotiating skills within a team environment
- Ability to negotiate consensus amongst diverse groups and impact the activities of others in a matrixed environment
- Works well and is effective in a dynamic, face-paced environment, adaptable to shifting priorities
The base pay range for this role is $179,500.00 - $219,800.00. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Honest. Eligible roles also qualify for short-term incentives and a comprehensive benefits package.
