Job description

Company Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, g’day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you’re probably keen to find out what’s on offer, so we’ll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Work closely with the team’s technical lead, to ensure the team is on track to achieving their goals.
  • Be directly responsible for a team of awesome engineers and developing their skills through effective coaching and mentoring.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership through code reviews, creating and reviewing design documents, and contributing code.
  • Use first principles reasoning and XY problem solving skills to protect the domain integrity of our artefacts, while supporting Canva to deliver awesome new features and functionality to our users
  • Drive the planning and refinement of goals, ensuring there is alignment across the company, group, and teams.
  • Embed best practices into our development processes, helping improve processes through regular retrospectives and way of working reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineers and PMs across the business to shape our capabilities

You’re probably a match if

  • you have experience in technical leadership, making sound decisions and executing on technical projects
  • you thrive as a technical people leader of backend engineers, and delivering outcomes on technical projects
  • you’re well versed in agile and application of best practices (we like Lean, Kanban, and Scrum)
  • you have hands on experience in Java and AWS
  • you are firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns
  • you have exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to break large projects down into smaller ones and deliver on them through others.
  • you’re a strong communicator and can quickly build effective working relationships across teams

About the team

The Design Gateway’s team mission is to provide and maintain reliable, robust, and scalable code supporting the design creation, viewing, editing experiences. We are a small, dynamic team who are responsible for some of the most critical services in Canva. We are involved in many initiatives across the business, ensuring that feature delivery is balanced with stability, security, maintainability and performance of our services. We integrate with many downstream services, and handle a diverse range of situations, giving us a uniquely broad view across Canva. As part of the Document Platform subgroup, we also work closely with the teams that manage storage of, updating of, and collaboration on Designs

About the role

We are looking to hire a engineering leader to help the Design Gateway deliver on its current roadmap, and prepare to meet future needs. You will be in the thick of it - working across technical design, roadmap definition, code architecture, engagement with key stakeholders across the technical leaders, and providing technical mentorship to the team. Working on a key part of the Canva infrastructure, you will help the Canva product stay secure and reliable at scale

What’s in it for you?

Achieving our crazy big goals motivates us to work hard - and we do - but you’ll experience lots of moments of magic, connectivity and fun woven throughout life at Canva, too. We also offer a range of benefits to set you up for every success in and outside of work.

Here’s a taste of what’s on offer:

  • Equity packages - we want our success to be yours too
  • Inclusive parental leave policy that supports all parents & carers
  • An annual Vibe & Thrive allowance to support your wellbeing, social connection, office setup & more
  • Flexible leave options that empower you to be a force for good, take time to recharge and supports you personally
