POSITION SUMMARY

Natera is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our Internal Tools team—a critical, full-stack platform powering our business operations. As a technical manager, you will guide a team of talented engineers while actively participating in system design and development, ultimately helping to positively impact patient outcomes. The Engineering Manager – Internal Tools is responsible for leading the team that designs, develops, and maintains AWS serverless microservices and front-end systems for operational processing and management. This hands-on role requires strong expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, GraphQL APIs, and event-driven architectures (e.g., AWS EventBridge, AWS Step Functions), while focusing on team leadership and delivery excellence.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead

  • Provide technical leadership for the Internal Tools team while maintaining hands-on involvement in development.

  • Drive technical design, architecture decisions, and implementation strategies for operational processing systems.

  • Establish and maintain engineering best practices around TypeScript, Node.js, React/Next.js, GraphQL, and event-driven architectures.

Manage

  • Oversee development of the Internal Tools platform, ensuring high availability and reliability.

  • Manage project priorities, deadlines, and resources while maintaining technical excellence.

  • Lead Agile ceremonies with a focus on continuous improvement and team efficiency.

Nurture

  • Guide the career development of engineers, with a focus on full-stack development expertise.

  • Provide mentorship in Node.js, TypeScript, React/Next.js, AWS, and microservices best practices.

  • Conduct regular 1:1s and performance evaluations focused on technical and professional growth.

Collaborate

  • Work closely with Product Management and stakeholders to define and deliver key capabilities in operational processing.

  • Foster collaboration between the Internal Tools team and other engineering teams.

Effect Change

  • Drive continuous improvement in our event-driven architecture and microservices approach (leveraging AWS EventBridge and AWS Step Functions).

  • Optimize development processes while maintaining high-quality standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of proven track record building and managing high-performance engineering teams.

  • 7+ years of hands-on development experience with TypeScript and Node.js in a production environment.

  • Strong expertise in event-driven architecture and message processing (e.g., Kafka, AWS EventBridge).

  • Experience with GraphQL API design and implementation.

  • Extensive experience with AWS services and microservice architecture.

  • Experience leading teams building secure, scalable backend and front-end services (React, Next.js).

  • Experience working with off-shore contractors and remote/hybrid teams.

  • Strong understanding of CI/CD practices and infrastructure as code (e.g., AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Hands-on expertise in TypeScript programming with Node.js.

  • Front-end experience using React and Next.js (and other relevant libraries/frameworks).

  • Strong experience with AWS services (e.g., Lambda, Step Functions, SQS, SNS, S3).

  • Practical knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, ElasticSearch, DynamoDB).

  • Experience with Docker and container orchestration.

  • Expertise in GraphQL API development and Kafka (or AWS EventBridge) event streaming.

  • Strong background in microservice architecture patterns.

  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK, etc.).

  • Experience with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., GitLab).

  • Proven ability to mentor and grow engineering talent.

  • Strong project management skills in Agile environments.

  • Experience with Bedrock and GenAI is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical leadership with people management.

  • Experience with testing strategies and quality assurance practices.

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
