Position Highlights:

Under general supervision, the instructor will facilitate Work Zone Safety classes using the National Safety Council curriculum.

Deliver research-based training materials through NSC-defined classroom educational activities to students regarding Work Zone Safety, and related issues. Content is developed based on MUTCD and ANSI standards. Training programs range from four to 16 hours in length and cover multiple curricula in which Instructors have completed standardized instructor development training. These courses cover Work Zone Flagger, Work Zone Technician, and Work Zone Supervisor curricula. Instructors will conduct, organize, and evaluate activities for students.

Key Responsibilities:

Instruction (80%):

  • Maintain confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • Maintain current knowledge of state regulations and local laws, and reference when instructing.
  • Serve as a resource to answer questions and clarify course content for participants.
  • Attend scheduled training or retraining, update seminars, and instructor development seminars as required and scheduled by NSC.
  • Conduct classes according to quality assurance expectations surrounding classroom management, content, dress, language, etc.
  • Consistently deliver all program curricula within program requirements and expectations, including proper timing/length of class.
  • Complete all NSC processes associated with in-person classroom training, including but not limited to printing rosters, attendee sign-in processes, updating student completion records & notes, etc., and any temporary processes associated with special circumstances (i.e., COVID-19).
  • Follow, without exception, NSC processes surrounding classroom emergencies.
  • Periodically teach class on short notice in cases of unscheduled instructor absence.

Classroom & Materials Preparation (10%):

  • Periodically test A/V equipment at classroom locations to ensure proper functionality.
  • Complete routine safety and maintenance walk-throughs at assigned lease classroom locations. Report issues to the supervisor promptly.
  • Post signage, survey prospective class sites, accept deliveries and rearrange classroom configuration.
  • Server as NSC representation at leased sites with vendors as needed.

Instructional Support (10%):

  • Monitor classes for quality assurance; complete monitoring form and provide detailed, constructive written feedback to supervisor.
  • Assist other Part-Time Instructors with minor technical / maintenance issues.
  • Perform other operational and administrative duties associated with instruction and classroom locations as assigned.
  • Submit expenses in a timely manner.

We’re Looking for Someone with:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction, or engineering.
  • Requires knowledge in construction, engineering, and workzones.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal and social communication skills; adept in presenting to groups of various sizes.
  • Requires ability to receive supervision and work independently.
  • Must demonstrate good organizational and time management skills.
  • Must use relevant technology to support instruction.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Background in engineering, construction, or education preferred.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge and skill in working with diverse populations.
  • Foster a positive environment free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Complete Instructor Development Courses (IDC) before instruction.
  • State Driver’s License may be required.
  • Complete and successfully pass the Criminal Offender Record check.
  • Demonstrate and support NSC values: Be Safe, Be Bold, Be Impactful, Be NSC.
  • Pay rate: $40/hr
  • This is a remote position
