About the role
We’re looking for a Product Design Lead, Underwriting to help craft and elevate the future of underwriting at Coalition—a powerful and fast-moving part of our business where we combine human expertise with AI to make smarter, faster insurance decisions.
This is a rare opportunity to take on a high-impact design role in a space that’s ripe for innovation. You’ll collaborate with a mission-driven team of Product Managers, Engineers and Business partners to shape the design vision for our underwriting platform—one of the most critical systems at Coalition. Your work will live at the intersection of AI, workflow design, and user research, as you build tools that empower our underwriters to make faster, smarter decisions. These tools are central to our competitive advantage, and your contributions will have wide-reaching impact across the business.
This role offers flexibility to be a hands-on individual contributor or a player-coach—spending the majority of your time designing, while mentoring and managing one designer.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design of Coalition’s underwriting platform, owning end-to-end experiences that drive accuracy, speed, and usability
- Define the long-term design vision and UX strategy for a system that blends human expertise and AI-powered insights
- Partner with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to deeply understand underwriter needs and workflows
- Design solutions that bring clarity and confidence to complex decision-making processes
- Translate abstract or technical concepts (like risk scoring and automation) into elegant, intuitive experiences
- Apply a service design mindset to identify and solve pain points across the underwriting journey
- Use qualitative and quantitative insights to guide decisions and iterate with purpose
- Contribute to and help evolve our design system in collaboration with other designers
- If applicable: manage and mentor one designer, fostering growth and quality across the work
Skills and Qualifications
- 7+ years of product design experience with a strong portfolio of work that shows impact, clarity, and craftsmanship across complex systems and workflows
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and moving quickly—you’re energized by fast-paced environments
- Experienced designing 0 to 1 products as well as improving and scaling existing systems
- Strong systems thinker with an eye for simplifying complexity into intuitive, efficient workflows
- Clear and thoughtful communicator who can confidently present your point of view while remaining open to feedback
- Skilled at balancing diverse inputs—user needs, business goals, and technical constraints—and turning them into actionable design solutions
- Collaborates seamlessly with cross-functional teams, contributing to product strategy as well as execution
- Deep experience with enterprise, internal, or B2B products where clarity, speed, and accuracy matte
