Department: Sustainability

Reports to: Director, Social & Environmental Sustainability

Location:  North Vancouver

Your Opportunity at ARC’TERYX:

As the Preferred Materials Program Manager, your primary focus will be on supporting our cross-functional teams to achieve our preferred materials targets, which are critical to the achievement of our science-based climate targets as well as our circularity goals. With your in-depth knowledge of the environmental and social impacts of textiles and other materials used in outdoor apparel, footwear and gear manufacturing, you will use your expertise to develop guidance documents and training and provide 1:1 support and insights to our raw materials, merchandizing and product design teams, among others. In addition to in-depth subject matter expertise, you will also be responsible for program management, supporting the ongoing development of the preferred materials roadmap and collaborating to build the tools required to communicate our progress with internal and external stakeholders. This role is expected to evolve in our dynamic environment, and will require persistence, adaptability and inventiveness to problem solve alongside business partners in the challenges presented when driving large scale impact initiatives.

This role is based out of our North Vancouver office and is open to hybrid remote work. Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.

Meet Your Future Team:

Our Sustainability team is small, mighty and operates in close contact with our leadership team and business functions for the highest impact. We have a core team of passionate experts responsible for developing strategy, programming and measuring progress against our company sustainability goals. We are part of the supply chain organization and work with key partners throughout Arc’teryx and Amer Sports.

If you were in the Preferred Materials Program Manager role now, here are some of the core activities you would be doing:

  • Acting as the primary point of contact for internal leaders and teams on all things preferred materials— including identifying where and when to provide guidance, delivering that guidance effectively, and responding directly to questions and requests for clarification
  • Applying your research, collaboration with experts inside the company, and your own expertise to developing and delivering regular robust internal guidance documents, trainings and tools which provide internal teams with clear, science-based guidance to support education and understanding of what preferred materials are and why they matter, on the road to achieving our preferred materials targets
  • Working cross-functionally to establish a single preferred materials roadmap which reflects the cross-functional commitments required and progress against them to achieve our goals.
  • Developing the program management to ensure that we maintain visibility of our progress against our preferred materials roadmap and that achievements are celebrated, obstacles are surfaced, and that updates are clearly and consistently shared
  • Developing a point of view and advising Arc’teryx supply chain and product leadership on preferred materials related policy and process to enable responsible and informed decision making. Support in shaping how preferred materials is approached and embedded more permanently into core business practices
  • Maintaining awareness of the regulatory environment and implications of upcoming regulations and collaborating with our Amer and Arc’teryx compliance functions to ensure we remain in compliance on preferred materials related matters
  • Connecting with the industry sustainability and preferred materials community for inspiration and collaboration opportunities
  • Supporting brand and employee communications and transparency initiatives that relate to preferred materials, and ensuring that our cross-functional partners’ efforts are celebrated in internal and external channels as appropriate
  • Collaborating cross-functionally to ensure we have efficient ways of working which enable and empower our colleagues and leaders to make informed decisions with the right information at the right time
  • Overseeing the development and reporting out on the right set of KPIs to monitor the success of our preferred materials initiatives

Here are some of the things you could be working on in the future:

  • Identifying new strategic initiatives to achieve our preferred materials goals and creating the cross-functional momentum and alignment to achieve them
  • Creating a long-term vision along with cross-functional partners for preferred materials at Arc’teryx
  • Leading engagement with certain external partners and/or NGOs
  • Partnering with our innovation team to provide insights and support in execution on new materials explorations as needed

Are you our next Preferred Materials Program Manager?

  • You have an undergraduate and/or graduate degree related to textiles science, change management, sustainable business, environmental science and/or business related field with appropriate certifications or an equivalent combination of related education and experience
  • You have 5+ years of experience in initiating, developing and leading sustainability strategy and/or management consulting experience in sustainability, with at least 3 years of experience working directly in textiles sustainability and impact topics.
  • You have apparel industry experience, with a strong understanding of apparel and footwear industry materials, their environmental impact, and best practices for managing them
  • You have a strong operations mindset with a good understanding of the business operations required to bring an apparel product to life.
  • You have expertise in the current and emerging sustainability principles, practices, regulations and technologies related to the environmental and social impact of textiles and the textiles industry.
  • You have experience with change management within a fast moving, complex business environment
  • You are proactive in identifying the root cause of issues and developing solutions
  • You are a builder that thrives in ambiguity and developing new programs and processes
  • You are highly collaborative with demonstrated effectiveness at building strong partnerships inside and outside your core team
  • You have excellent communication and presentation skills
  • You can effectively manage multiple projects and strategize around competing priorities
  • You are an independent worker, exceptionally organized, operate with integrity, and maintain personal accountability
  • You are passionate about making change and driving positive impact
