Job description

About Stoic & Towerborne

At Stoic, we’re a fully remote, independent game studio known for the award-winning Banner Saga trilogy and our latest title, Towerborne—a fast-paced, cooperative action RPG where players battle together to defend humanity in a post-apocalyptic world. As we evolve Towerborne into a vibrant, live game experience, we’re looking for a Director of Quality Assurance to lead the charge in delivering polished, high-quality updates to our global player base.

About the Role

As Director of QA, you’ll own the quality vision for Towerborne, leading all QA efforts from pre-release development through live operations. You’ll manage our internal QA team, external vendors, partner QA organizations, define scalable processes for a live service model, and partner across disciplines to ensure every release meets our high standards for stability, performance, and player satisfaction.

This is a strategic leadership role in a remote-first studio, ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is passionate about building world-class QA practices in support of ongoing game development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end QA strategy for Towerborne, supporting both initial releases and ongoing live content updates.
  • Champion build quality and availability, ensure proper testing throughout development, coordinate internally on build failures, and communicate timelines and health for build readiness.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Production, Design, and LiveOps to align testing efforts with development priorities and release timelines.
  • Partner and coordinate with publisher QA organization, to provide robust, player-ready releases.
  • Manage relationships with external QA vendors, ensuring clear expectations, efficient workflows, and consistent quality.
  • Drive all phases of testing—functional, regression, performance, multiplayer, and platform compliance—for PC and Xbox platforms.
  • Establish and scale QA processes, including test case management, bug triage, automation strategies, and player-impact assessments.
  • Lead LiveOps QA support, ensuring seamless deployment of hotfixes, seasonal content, and events with rapid turnaround and minimal disruption.
  • Track and report quality KPIs and provide studio-wide visibility into risk areas and release readiness.
  • Foster a quality-first culture across the team and champion player experience in all decisions.
  • Build and lead a remote QA team, including hiring, mentoring, and career development across multiple time zones.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in QA for video games, including leadership of QA for a shipped live service title.
  • Experience managing QA for cross-platform titles, particularly on Xbox and PC.
  • Strong background in both pre-release and live game testing, with a solid grasp of live game operations and patch workflows.
  • Demonstrated success managing remote QA teams and coordinating across time zones.
  • Proficient with test management tools, issue tracking systems, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities in a remote, agile environment.

Bonus Points

  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine and multiplayer game systems.
  • Experience supporting a co-op title.
  • Knowledge of Xbox certification, compliance, and release processes.
  • Interest in player behavior, analytics, and community sentiment as quality signals.
