Job description
About us
At Environment Bank, we’re working together to help restore natural habitats across England. With thousands of acres of new habitat creation already underway, our projects are delivering biodiversity gains and helping vital ecosystems to recover and flourish.
Our diverse team includes ecologists, land managers, habitat specialists, geospatial analysts, planning advisors, account managers, digital creatives, legal experts, and more.
From our habitat specialists to our sales and marketing teams, everyone at Environment Bank is a champion for our values, working towards our goal of reversing biodiversity loss.
Environment Bank is a market-leading organisation in a sector that’s experiencing rapid growth. We’ve already built a highly skilled team of experts and we’re actively looking to expand our team in the coming months.
We’re incredibly proud of all we achieved so far and we’re still growing. If you’d like to be part of a driven organisation that’s making a real difference, find your next role with the team at Environment Bank.
About the role
We are looking for a strategic and forward-thinking Science and Verification Lead to join Environment Bank’s Emerging Nature Markets team. This role is about helping us stay at the cutting edge of nature investment, ensuring the credibility of our work while also guiding us through a fast-evolving scientific and technical landscape.
You will lead the development of monitoring and reporting strategies across our nature investment products, starting with Nature Shares and expanding into new opportunities. You will also be responsible for shaping our approach to third-party verification and helping us align with emerging standards in nature markets.
A key part of this role is to help us cut through the noise. There is a constant stream of new tools, methods and models emerging, from satellite-based carbon tracking to AI-driven habitat mapping to novel uses of eDNA. We are looking for someone with the scientific background to evaluate these developments and the practical mindset to help us decide what is relevant, what to test, and when to act.
The scope of the role also extends beyond biodiversity. You will help define how we monitor and report on other ecosystem services including carbon, water and social value. This will support both the credibility of our reporting and the ability for our projects to connect with other natural capital markets. You will not be expected to know every methodology in detail, but you will need to stay on top of new standards and guidance, and work with third-party verification bodies to ensure our work is aligned.
This is not a delivery or fieldwork position. It is a strategic and technical leadership role that will shape the way we build products, present data and make decisions. You will work closely with the product, sales and delivery teams, and act as the internal expert for science and monitoring across all emerging market activity.
What you’ll be doing
Strategy: Develop and maintain credible monitoring, reporting and verification frameworks across all new products. Ensure our methods are practical, consistent and grounded in science.
Verification: Lead our approach to third-party verification and certification. Ensure our work aligns with the expectations of frameworks such as TNFD, SBTN, CSRD and nationally specific standards such as BSI Flex 701.
Ecosystem services monitoring: Shape our approach to measuring not just biodiversity, but also carbon, water, and social value. Make sure our data is suitable for integration into wider natural capital markets and can support emerging nature finance opportunities.
Scanning and prioritisation: Track developments in environmental monitoring and modelling, from academic research to tech startup tools. Make sense of this fast-moving space and help the team understand what matters. Prioritise where we should act, what to explore, and what to ignore.
Product development: Work closely with the product team to ensure all new offers are underpinned by strong technical foundations. Translate ecological data and insights into usable reporting for businesses.
Collaboration: Support the ecological delivery lead to ensure fieldwork and data collection meet necessary standards. Work with sales to support credible technical claims and respond to buyer requirements.
External engagement: Represent our scientific position in conversations with clients, partners and standard-setting bodies. Build credibility through transparent communication and a pragmatic, evidence-based approach.
EDI & Belonging
At the heart of Environment Bank are the people, who make it all possible. We employ individuals, who share the same passion to live our Environment Bank mission and values.
At Environment Bank we believe that fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace makes us more innovative, dynamic, and competitive. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and experiences. We are committed to creating an environment where everyone is valued and respected, free from discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, gender identity or expression, or any other legally protected status.
Experience: At least five years of experience in applied ecology, biodiversity monitoring or nature-based solutions. Experience working with MRV platforms, research teams or nature tech tools is welcome.
Knowledge: Strong understanding of key nature reporting and verification frameworks such as TNFD, SBTN and CSRD. Familiarity with current and emerging approaches to ecological and ecosystem service monitoring.
Technical mindset: You will be comfortable engaging with datasets, tools and monitoring protocols. You do not need to be a coder or field ecologist, but you should be confident reading a new methodology or model and understanding what it means.
Communication: You can explain complex technical topics clearly to non-specialist colleagues such as the Emerging Markets Head of Corporate Engagement. You are confident making recommendations and helping others act in the face of uncertainty.
Education: A PhD or equivalent experience in ecology, environmental science or a related field is preferred.
You will understand both the pace of innovation and the need for grounded, credible action. You will also be someone who enjoys making sense of complexity and turning emerging science into something a business can use.
As an organisation, we believe that work should be fulfilling, inspiring, and balanced, so we’re creating a space where our team can thrive, both personally and professionally – providing flexible working arrangements, mental wellbeing support, and more.
