Job description

MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

The Team

The Development Infrastructure (DevInfra) team sits within the SRE Platform Engineering organization and focuses on curating and improving the foundational tools and workflows that enable our engineers to develop, build, and ship infrastructure safely and efficiently. Our remit includes managing our GitHub Actions self-hosted runners, Terraform workflows, Bazel build system, and Crossplane to enable scalable multi-cloud infrastructure provisioning through Kubernetes. We support services deployed across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

DevInfra plays a central role in ensuring our infrastructure development experience is repeatable, testable, and fast, helping engineering teams operate efficiently and safely at scale.

This role can be based in our NYC HQ, one of our North American offices, or fully remote from anywhere in North America. For office-based employees, we offer a flexible hybrid work policy.

Role Overview

We are looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join the DevInfra team and help shape the systems and workflows that empower infrastructure developers at MongoDB. You will play a key role in designing, implementing, and improving the systems that make it safe and easy to deliver infrastructure as code, build and test using Bazel (running on self-hosted GitHub Actions runners), and provision cloud infrastructure via Kubernetes using Crossplane.

This is a highly collaborative role – you’ll work closely with other Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Security and end user teams, contributing to both technical design and hands-on implementation. Your work will directly influence the developer experience and the reliability of our cloud provisioning and infrastructure development workflows.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have 4+ years of experience building and operating developer-facing infrastructure or platform tooling
  • Be comfortable working with Terraform, and have experience managing Terraform workflows in a team or multi-environment setup
  • Have hands-on experience with GitHub Actions, including writing reusable and maintainable workflows
  • Have experience with Bazel (or similar build systems like Buck, Buck2 or Pants) and care about build performance, caching, and reproducibility
  • Care deeply about developer experience, reducing cognitive load, and eliminating manual toil through automation
  • Have experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and familiarity with concepts like IAM, VPCs, OpenID Connect and CI/CD
  • Have a solid foundation in infrastructure-as-code, including how to test, validate, and gate changes safely
  • Be eager to work on cross-cutting tooling and collaborate across multiple engineering teams
  • Write clear documentation and proactively share knowledge with others

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with Crossplane or similar Kubernetes-native infrastructure provisioning tools
  • Familiarity with or interest in Backstage or similar internal developer portals
  • Previous contributions to building or maintaining internal developer platforms or tooling
  • Experience working in multi-cloud environments
  • An interest in onboarding and mentoring others in infrastructure best practices

Expectations

  • Contribute to core components of our Terraform and Bazel workflows
  • Implement improvements to our infrastructure CI/CD and build pipelines
  • Contribute to a roadmap that makes it easier for teams to safely onboard infrastructure changes and scale workflows
  • Participate in our on-call rotation, focused on infrastructure tooling reliability supporting production services

To drive the personal growth and business impact of our employees, we’re committed to developing a supportive and enriching culture for everyone. From employee affinity groups, to fertility assistance and a generous parental leave policy, we value our employees’ wellbeing and want to support them along every step of their professional and personal journeys.
