Job description

Vox Media employees thrive on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology, and the world around them.

Our Future Perfect section is an especially exciting place for that mission to come alive. Future Perfect covers the world through a particular prism: What are the best ways to do good in this world? Inspired and informed by effective altruism, Future Perfect strives to shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals.

Vox is looking for a deputy editor for Future Perfect. We want a self-starter who will help drive daily coverage on Future Perfect, oversee our freelance program, and edit and manage three of our writers: Sigal Samuel, Kenny Torrella and Marina Bolotnikova. This person will also assist the Future Perfect editor in overall management of the section and its staff, and will run the section in conjunction with their fellow deputy editor when the section editor is absent. This is a permanent full-time staff position.

Among our key subject areas include:

  • Global poverty and public health
  • The catastrophic and existential threats, both natural and technological, that humanity faces
  • Animal welfare and factory farming
  • The growth of progress studies and evidence-based policies that can boost sustainable growth for all
  • The frontiers of artificial intelligence and biotechnology
  • The philosophies and practices surrounding philanthropy and altruism, and the moral and ethical questions that underpin individual and policy choices.

Since its launch in 2018, Future Perfect has developed a loyal following for its idiosyncratic, mission-driven approach to news. Our coverage is animated by a baseline question: what’s truly important that we need to cover – not what’s in the news, not what’s trending on Twitter, but the stories that we think truly matter for human and animal lives and the future? Then we go ahead and do those stories today.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and edit three staff writers — soliciting ideas, selecting stories, editing text and managing their advancement at Vox Media. Their focuses include ethics, AI safety and policy, animal welfare and factory farming, and effective policymaking in areas like housing and science.
  • Editing our biweekly newsletter on Processing Meat, written by Kenny Torrella
  • Assist the Future Perfect editorial director in setting and keeping priorities, both daily and over the medium and long term projects — especially in the area of agriculture and animal welfare — and stepping in to help lead the staff as a whole when he is away
  • Commission and edit occasional pieces for the Future Perfect site

What you’ll bring:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience editing, or equivalent
  • Strong managerial philosophy and communication skills; previous management experience is desirable but not a requirement
  • A passion for mentoring, managing and editing writers
  • A demonstrated ability to bring analysis and sharp angles to news stories, as well as well as skill with handling collaborations with audio and video teams
  • An understanding of the importance of careful editing, coupled with the ability to build and shepherd big ideas
  • Experience in and enthusiasm for diving into research literature, particularly in economics, psychology, sociology, political science, biology/medicine, and computer science is desirable

To apply, please submit a résumé, cover letter, and 3-5 clips that you’ve edited or written (clips can either be linked in your cover letter or included as additional pages to your cover letter).

In your one-page cover letter, please be sure to address the following questions: What appeals to you about working at Vox’s Future Perfect? What’s your management and mentoring philosophy for working with writers?

If you think you have what it takes, but don’t meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! We’ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
