Location

This role can work remotely from anywhere in the USA. You must be legally authorized to work in the US. Bixal does not provide visa sponsorship.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Bixal is seeking a Drupal Engineer to support the VA.gov IDIQ as part of the Secure, Performant, Reliable, and User-Centered Experiences (SPRUCE) contract. This role involves working on some of the most highly used Veteran-facing products, ensuring accessibility, scalability, and security while improving digital experiences for Veterans and their families.

This is a full-time position contingent on a contract awarded by our client, with a defined performance period of up to one year and the possibility of two one-year extensions. This role offers you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a project that aligns with Bixal’s mission of delivering innovative, human-centered solutions. Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Drupal-based content management solutions for VA.gov, ensuring seamless integration with the broader ecosystem.
  • Build and maintain APIs (GraphQL, REST) to support the VA’s decentralized content management system (CMS).
  • Implement enhancements for Veteran-facing content, facility pages, and search features, ensuring a user-friendly experience.
  • Support Drupal migrations and integrations with Next.js, collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Maintain compliance with Section 508, WCAG 2.2 AA, and other federal accessibility standards.
  • Optimize performance, security, and content workflows in a decoupled Drupal environment.
  • Work closely with UX, content, and development teams to improve editorial interfaces and user experiences.
  • Participate in Agile sprints, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Other relevant duties as qualified and trained to perform.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, plus at least four (4) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in Drupal development, particularly in Drupal 910, including custom module development, theming, and configuration management.
  • Strong understanding of decoupled Drupal architectures and integration with front-end frameworks (e.g., Next.js, React).
  • Proficiency in PHP, GraphQL, JavaScript, and API development.
  • Experience with VA.gov or similar government websites with compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with AWS or cloud-based infrastructure for hosting Drupal applications.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills within Agile teams.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience working with federal digital services or civic tech projects.
  • Knowledge of Metalsmith & Liquid templates, Ruby on Rails, or other VA.gov technologies.
  • Familiarity with Figma and content modeling best practices.
  • Background in site performance optimization and security hardening for enterprise-scale Drupal applications.

$120,000 - $125,000 a year
