The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring an Editor to play a crucial role in shaping and producing FLI’s written, broadcast and video output.ย Our outreach projects currently include (but are not limited to) top-tier press outreach, short films production, building a network of aligned content creators, creating a series of AGI-focused PSAs, executing a national public engagement campaign and more. In the next 6-12 months, we plan to scale up our outreach and campaign efforts even further to produce targeted content for a broad range of key audiences. To enable this, we need creative and detail oriented talent to drive these projects forward. The Editor will report directly to FLI’s Director of Communications.
Do you believe we need to raise awareness about the risks and benefits of advanced AI, and the steps necessary to ensure its safe and prosperous development?
FLI educates and engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the general public about transformative technologies and their implications. In doing so, it advises and advocates on the necessary steps to avoid catastrophic risks while bringing about positive futures for all.
As Editor, you will:
- Shape and produce written output to deliver maximum impact, including. opeds, blog posts, website copy and press releases.
- Edit scripts and storyboards to help create world-class content across all of FLI’s platforms, incl. short-form video, social media, movies and PSAs.
- Help produce effective messaging that clearly communicates FLI’s positions in an evocative and informative manner.
- Work with FLI comms team and leadership to generate and refine new content and commentary ideas for driving awareness and understanding of FLI issues.
- Depending on seniority: Take ownership over large media campaigns, from conception to distribution.
Required qualifications, skills and qualities:
- Undergraduate degree or higher.
- Written and spoken fluency in English.
- Relevant and high quality experience in journalism, editing, screenwriting or related field.
- Proven flair for communicating complex and/or technical issues in a clear and evocative manner.
- Strong understanding of issues surrounding AI development and deployment, including (but not limited to) loss of control, misuse, power concentration, alignment, and AGI/superintelligence.
- Demonstrated aptitude for communication and messaging across specific audiences and different stakeholder groups.
- Excited by the prospect of joining a small but influential team looking to improve humanityโs future.
Preferred qualifications, skills and qualities:
- Undergraduate degree in communications, English, journalism or related discipline.
- Proven writing ability on issues relating to AI and its development/deployment.
- In-depth understanding of how to develop scripts and storyboards for production.
- Experience writing commentary for top-tier publications.
- Speech-writing and ghostwriting expertise.
- Experience managing large media campaigns.
$90,000 - $190,000 a year
Exact compensation will vary depending on experience and geography.

FLI is a largely virtual organization, with a team of >25 distributed internationally, mostly in Europe and the US. We have four offices: Campbell in California, Brussels in Belgium, London in the UK, and Washington DC. We meet in person as a full team twice a year.
