Job description

The Organization

What if K-12 education were designed to help all students develop lives of meaning and purpose? Wayfinder was founded at the Stanford d.school to answer this question. Our goal is to double our impact each year for the coming years. Our vision is to become the preeminent future-readiness curriculum company in the world — leading the global movement of purpose, meaning, and belonging-based education worldwide.

What We Value

You’ll be joining a team of incredibly motivated and dedicated staff members committed to living our organization’s values. We work collaboratively across teams, and we feel and act like a purpose-driven organization. To the best of our abilities, each person’s role aligns with their own sense of purpose, which feeds into Wayfinder’s larger sense of purpose.

Read this article about our workplace culture in Conscious Company.

We value equal access, inclusive community, and belonging, and these values are represented in our product, our team, and our school partners.

Product: We develop our learning tools using human-centered design principles. We work with grade-level experts to ensure our curriculum is developmentally appropriate and engaging at all levels. Every Wayfinder lesson is supported by relevant research, prototyped in classrooms, and vetted by teachers over rounds of feedback and iteration. We use Universal Design for Learning principles to give every student an equal opportunity to succeed.

Team: Our team is composed of people from all different backgrounds and walks of life. We intentionally recruit, hire, and work with people of all identities + experiences. We focus on belonging: being connected, accepted, and valued by the people around us.

School Partners: We intentionally target a wide array of educational partners, from traditional to non-traditional, that work with a range of students from different socioeconomic groups. We’ve taught our curriculum in high-need schools in the Bronx, independent schools in Silicon Valley, and after-school programs in San Antonio.

The Role

We’re looking for a talented + entrepreneurial Quality Assurance Intern to work with our Engineering team at Wayfinder. The Quality Assurance Tester will work asynchronously with the engineering team and report to the Director of Quality Assurance to help ensure the quality of our product and user experience.  The main responsibilities of the role revolve around the concept of continuous testing with a handoff in testing responsibilities - at the end of the US workday, this role will be expected to execute tests and report on results for the following workday.

Responsibilities

  • Testing

    • Execute manual test cases at the end of the US work hours in a test execution platform such as Xray or Zephyr.  This includes QA practices such as sanity testing, smoke testing, checklist testing, and regression testing.
    • Report test results to your lead and write any bug tickets in Jira, our task management system.
  • Quality Assurance

    • Maintain and update tests, including test steps and results in a test case management system such as TestRail or Xray.
    • Communicate between key teams, including Engineering and Product.
  • Learning

    • Gain business experience to grow and learn for a future career in Quality Assurance, engineering, or another related field in software.
    • Learn to work in a growing company with a relatively lean team size, weighing business needs with quality assurance best practices.  This includes typical tools such as email, messaging, and video conference.  At our company, familiarity with GMail, Slack, Google Meet, and Zoom is useful.
    • Learn the foundational skills and processes of QA in a software company.
    • Learn the basics on how web-app development functions, including Software Development Life Cycle, everyday skills around browser developer tools, and a basic understanding of HTML, Javascript, and APIs.

Below we have listed out some things we are looking for; you do not necessarily need to check all these boxes to be eligible for this position. Here are some skills and talents that would make for an excellent candidate:

  • Current student or recent graduate: This is meant to be a student employment opportunity for those with zero to little work experience in software.

  • Interest in education, QA, or computer science: Education or software interest related to our company’s products and this role are preferred, but we are open to star performers interested in shifting their career after graduation.

  • Curiosity: tasks such as finding and reporting bugs means you must have a natural tendency to be curious as to how a system works. Bring an attitude of “how does this work” and “how can I break this” to the company!

  • Excellent communication: QA roles often work with different members of the company - the ability to communicate as much as possible with the fewest words and graphics as possible is a key strength.  Both listening and telling are strong skill-sets for a successful career in QA.

  • Detail oriented: QA are involved in verification and validation of software - which require QA teammates to be detail oriented.

  • This is a part-time/contractual position, ideal availability is minimum 15 hours per week,  schedule is TBD based on availability.

  • Ideal start date is May 15. Contract length is flexible; ideal commitment is a minimum of three months.

  • This is a paid internship at $20 an hour.

  • Wayfinder is a 100% remote company, and this position is fully remote.
