Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job description

About Bedrock:

Bedrock is operationalizing the largest Earth-exploration mission in human history. We’re doing that by developing robotics & software to explore, map, and classify the entirety of Earth’s ocean floor. The oceans are a critical component of climate stabilization. Our hope is to provide critical subsea data and infrastructure to further understand and predict the fundamental forces that support harmonious human existence on this planet.

About You and the Role:

The ocean covers over 70% of our planet—we need the sea to survive—but despite its importance we know little about it: over 80% of the ocean has never been mapped; moreover, it’s believed that less than 5% has been mapped at least at a 100m resolution.

The truth is that humans know much more about the surfaces of the Moon and Mars than our own ocean floor. We at Bedrock think that needs to change. Quickly.

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team and support the design of our autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), other subsea and production equipment. We need someone who shares our values and is driven by our purpose and mission. Most importantly, we’re looking for a good human being with a low ego who cares about the future of our planet and is willing to take on this challenge with us.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be responsible for the mechanical design efforts on new AUV systems and the supporting equipment needed to unlock the huge logistical savings of a disruptive technology in an emerging industry. We are a forward looking cross functional team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers striving to push the boundaries. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with all of our team members to develop new ideas and solutions that will help us achieve our mission.

We’re a small and collaborative team that values open communication. We want to empower each team member to take ownership of their work and contribute to our growth and success. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a cross-functional, fast-paced environment and is excited to join us on this adventure. Only candidates with a strong desire to be part of the solution should apply.

If you’re ready to explore the last true frontier left on Earth and make a meaningful impact on the future of our planet, we want to hear from you. Apply now to join the Bedrock team!

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering from an accredited institution

  • 5+ years of experience in the engineering process, including concept development, analysis, design, drawing, integration and testing of complex mechanical and/or ocean deployed systems

  • Proficiency in engineering software such as Inventor, FEA, CFD, and MATLAB

  • Proficiency to independently perform engineering analysis, such as structural, dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, machine design, etc.

  • Experience with integrating with electronics assemblies including printed circuit board (PCB) design and harness routing

  • Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) methodologies

  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing, laser cutting, and CNC machining

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies

  • Familiarity with production documentation, such as work instructions, process maps, and control plans

  • Technically manage projects of small scope

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities

  • Good communication and teamwork skills

  • Strong hands-on build, fabrication, assembly, test experience willing to roll up your sleeves to deliver and complete the design through field testing

  • Must be local to the Bay Area or willing to relocate

Bonus Experience:

  • Experience with subsea equipment or marine systems including launch and recovery

  • Experience with robotics systems

  • Experience with automation and robotics in a manufacturing setting

  • Familiarity with programming or scripting languages, such as Python, C++, or MATLAB

  • Explore the last true frontier left on Earth with us

We’re seeking ultra-determined people who aren’t afraid to pioneer new solutions and challenge conventional assumptions. Most of all, we’re looking for high-quality, good human beings with low egos who are purpose and mission driven. We are looking for someone who cares as much about the future of our life on earth as we do, and willing to take on the challenge together to face one of the greatest equalizers of technologies on the planet, the ocean.
