Job description
We are looking for passionate, skilled, and motivated interns to join Wherobots’ dynamic team in building the distributed geospatial cloud database of the future. As an intern in our WherobotsDB & geospatial analytics team, you will help build new features, assist in designing and implementing APIs to extend our geospatial query capabilities, and contribute to improving the performance, observability, and reliability of WherobotsDB‘s distributed query engine.
We are 100% cloud-native and build our product using modern and reliable tools and technologies. WherobotsDB is built in Java, Scala and Rust, with deeply optimized Python wrappers and SDKs, and our services are deployed on cloud-based Kubernetes environments.
If you are passionate about building a cutting-edge, scalable geospatial database and want to be part of a fast-growing company at the forefront of geospatial technology, we would love to hear from you. Apply now and join the Wherobots team!
Responsibilities
Implement new vector and raster functions and algorithms to extend Wherobots’ geospatial capabilities, while also improving related documentation.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements, identify technical solutions, and deliver high-quality software.
Make open-source contributions to many Apache projects including Sedona, Spark, Arrow, Parquet, Iceberg and other open-source software packages where necessary.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate has a passion for open-source projects and communities, and is eager to learn and contribute.
Strong technical background, including coursework or project experience related to scalable, distributed systems or spatial query algorithms.
Proficiency in Java and/or Scala required.
Demonstrated interest in building high-quality, maintainable, and observable software.
Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, and fundamentals of distributed systems.
Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with interest in working effectively in a hybrid or distributed team environment.
Nice to have:
Hands-on experience programming in Python.
Experience with large-scale geospatial data processing and applications.
Compensation and benefits
Wherobots offers competitive internship compensation. The monthly salary range for this position is US$7,500 to US$10,000, depending on experience, availability, and duration of the internship. Interns do not qualify for other company benefits.
Although we aim to establish a primary engineering presence in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Seattle, we provide flexibility and choice in the working arrangement for most roles, including remote and/or in-office roles.
We are unable to sponsor visas for this internship position. Applicants must be based in the United States and already hold a valid visa (such as an F-1 student visa) with work authorization (e.g., CPT).
About Wherobots
Wherobots was founded by the original creators of Apache Sedona to build the first fully-managed, highly scalable geospatial cloud database and analytics platform: Wherobots Cloud. Geospatial, location-enabled, and satellite imagery data are quickly becoming a critical and valuable source of information and insights to a broad array of industries, from logistics and insurance to financial or climate tech companies.
