The role / Position overview
Ignites, an online daily from the Financial Times, is looking for a reporter to join its team covering the mutual fund and ETF industry. This reporter will cover how Securities and Exchange Commission and Department of Labor actions impact the mutual fund and retirement industries. The reporter will write about regulation (and deregulation), as well as major enforcement actions against asset managers like Vanguard, Empower and Invesco. The reporter will also cover fund companies, including Goldman Sachs Asset Management and MFS.
We are looking for a reporter who can dive into long, sophisticated documents and understand what is important. This reporter should also be comfortable speaking with sources, digging through data and translating jargon.
We are the world-class publication covering the mutual fund, ETF and 401(k) marketplaces, and a go-to source for industry decision-makers.
The position is based in Manhattan, however we have a hybrid remote-work policy.
Key responsibilities
- Reporting and writing three to five stories per week for our daily newsletter
- Mining public documents and developing a network of sources to generate scoops and story ideas
- Contributing to all storytelling formats, including videos, features, webcasts and, when appropriate, graphics and other visualizations
- Attending industry events and meeting with sources to stay on top of the latest industry trends (including virtual events)
Required skills / experience
- A desire to join a team focused on keeping our publication’s market-leading position by contributing fresh, original content relevant to our niche audience
- Experience digging through regulatory or legal filings
- Proven track record to develop a network of sources
- Interest in working across media platforms, such as print, video, visuals
- Strong critical thinking skills
- Previous legal/regulatory reporting is preferred.
- No prior financial journalism experience is required, but candidates who have a particular interest in the topics described are encouraged to identify that when applying.

Further information
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $71,000–$92,000. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skills; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. The disclosed range estimate is for our NYC office and has not been adjusted for other locations.
