Job description
Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Service-Based Business Focus
⚠️ PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE JOB DESCRIPTION BEFORE APPLYING ⚠️
Are You the Kind of CFO Who Can See the Story Behind the Numbers?
You’re not just a spreadsheet slinger. You’re someone who gets fired up when a P&L starts to tell a story—especially when that story can change a small business owner’s life.
We’re looking for a CFO with deep experience in service-based businesses (not manufacturing, construction, or asset-heavy industries). You know how to take financial statements, connect them to a client’s motivations, and help them make smart, courageous decisions grounded in data—not fear.
You love educating and breaking down financials into clear, actionable insights. You challenge assumptions, help clients face facts, and use real-life experience (and maybe a little humor) to steer entrepreneurs toward better futures.
And here’s a big one: if you’ve had more than one job in the last five years, this role is not a fit. We’re looking for leaders with stability, long-term impact, and consistent track records.

Who We Are
We’re How To Manage A Small Law Firm, one of Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing privately held companies every year since 2013. We support over 500 small law firms nationwide with outsourced CEO, COO, CFO, CMO, and bookkeeping services.
Think of this as helping small businesses that just happen to practice law. We’re a team of real humans who value honesty, humility, humor, and 100% personal responsibility.
If you’re the type who enjoys reading a budget variance for fun or gets a little giddy building a cash flow forecast—you’re going to love it here.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Fractional CFO, you’ll act as the financial strategist and partner for 20–30 small law firm clients.
Meet virtually with each client twice per month (~60 hours/month direct client time)
Analyze financial statements and identify trends, risks, and opportunities
Translate financial concepts into clear, actionable steps
Hold clients accountable for execution
Collaborate with bookkeepers to correct errors and ensure clean data
Participate in pod meetings and company training
Guide improvements in financial systems, controls, and processes
Travel occasionally for live events (optional, unless training is required)
Workload: ~40–45 hours/week, fully remote, with meaningful impact.

We’re looking for a very specific type of CFO. You must:

Have held a Senior Accountant, Director, Controller, or CFO role in a company with $20M–$50M revenue.
Have a stable track record (5+ years of tenure at most prior companies).
Have successfully guided small to midsized businesses through financial challenges and growth.
Be comfortable bringing clarity to disorganized books and creating structure from chaos.
Have managed teams of 5+ people.
Lead with accountability, strategy, and integrity—not just cost-cutting.
This Job Is NOT For You If:
You’ve had multiple jobs in the last 5 years.
Your experience is primarily in manufacturing, construction, retail, real estate, mortgage, nonprofit, or other asset-heavy industries.
You have never advised or grown a small to midsized service-based business.

You’ve never worked in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
You want part-time work (this is a full-time role).
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting (CPA preferred).
10+ years of progressive financial leadership (CFO, Controller, or equivalent).

High EQ and a coaching-oriented leadership style.
