Job description

Mudflap serves the $800B trucking industry, the backbone of the U.S. economy. Our market-leading payment products help truckers save thousands of dollars on fuel (their #1 business expense), while providing our fuel stop partners with access to new, hard-to-reach customers. We’re a fast-growing marketplace business looking for exceptional Engineering Managers who will lead and scale our product engineering teams, helping shape the future of our consumer-focused fintech platform.

As a Sr. Engineering Manager you will manage a team of 5+ engineers, driving the development of consumer-focused fintech and marketplace products while partnering closely with product, data, and engineering leadership. This role requires a balance of hands-on technical expertise, leadership experience, and a proven ability to scale engineering teams in both startup and larger tech environments. You will play a key role in shaping our engineering culture, mentoring your team, and delivering high-quality software that powers the future of trucking payments.

Expectations (In this role, you will):

  • Drive the delivery of high-quality features for our mobile and web platforms, with a focus on consumer fintech and marketplace products.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop top-tier engineering talent as we continue to grow.
  • Lead and mentor a team of 5+ engineers across multiple levels, fostering growth, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Partner closely with the Director of Data Insights and Engineering, Head of Product, and Head of Engineering to set technical vision, roadmap priorities, and team objectives.
  • Ensure engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, CI/CD, and monitoring, are adopted and maintained across teams.
  • Balance short-term product delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability of our Ruby on Rails, Python, and Go systems.
  • Cultivate a strong engineering culture rooted in collaboration, ownership, and customer obsession.

Experience (What we look for):

  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, ideally leading product engineering teams with 5–10 direct reports.
  • Experience building distributed systems in a startup environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails, plus exposure to Python or Go.
  • Background in consumer mobile applications and consumer fintech or marketplace products.
  • Experience scaling back end engineering teams in both startup and larger tech company environments.
  • Strong technical leadership skills with a proven track record of delivering complex projects end-to-end.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work effectively with cross-functional partners, including Product, Data, and Design.
  • A mentor and coach who thrives in building high-performing teams and cultivating a positive engineering culture.

If you’re excited about this role and believe you can contribute, we encourage you to apply—even if your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every bullet point.
