Server / Prep Cook (In-School)

Red Rabbit is a Black-owned School Food Management Company that works with hundreds of schools, districts, and food banks to uplift communities of color throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Our professionally trained chefs create menus, source farm-fresh ingredients, and cook delicious, thoughtful, and familiar food. School food matters not only because it’s integral to good health, but also because what children eat is an essential part of their cultural identity and sense of self.
A bout the Role
The Server / Prep Cook is a dynamic, hybrid role and an integral part of a 3 - 7 person team supporting both meal service and kitchen operations. This position is primarily focused on serving and distributing meals , meal packing and light food preparation.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with students while also supporting kitchen production. The ideal candidate is reliable, team-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Key Responsibilities
Serving & Meal Distribution (70%)
Portion and serve meals to students in accordance with Red Rabbit and state guidelines
Present and distribute meals with professionalism, dignity, and efficiency
Ensure timely service aligned with school schedules
Accurately count and track meals served to ensure compliance and minimize waste
Represent Red Rabbit’s culture and values when interacting with students and school staff
Meal Packing & Kitchen Support (20%)
Pack and organize meals for service and distribution
Assist with transporting and setting up meals for service
Support inventory counts and ensure accurate meal tracking
Maintain organization of service areas before, during, and after meal periods
Food Prep Support (10%)
Assist with basic food preparation tasks (washing, portioning, light prep)
Follow recipes and production sheets as directed by the Head Chef
Support kitchen team with plating and finishing dishes as needed
General Responsibilities
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace that exceeds Department of Health (DOH) standards
Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures
Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to meet daily production and service goals
Perform other duties as assigned
Skills & Requirements
1+ years of experience in food service, school food, or a high-volume kitchen environment
Experience serving food in a fast-paced setting preferred
Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
ServeSafe certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days; reimbursement available)
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset
Passion for improving nutrition and health in schools
Must be able to read and write in English (bilingual Spanish a plus)
Ability to lift 50 lbs regularly

Typical Hours: Monday – Friday (hours vary based on site needs)
Location: Newark, NJ
Reports to: Head Chef
Compensation: $16.50 - $18.00/hour
