Work Arrangement: Hybrid - 3 days/week in the SEO office at 3401 N Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33127; Work requires traveling to different physical locations for recruitment in the fall and for occasional in-person programming across semesters
Hours/Schedule:
- Fall & Spring Terms: Tuesday through Saturday (3x a month); Monday through Friday (during mid-year program break)
- Summer Term: Monday through Friday

POSITION OVERVIEW
Scholar (Student) Advisors are essential to the continued success of the Scholars Program. As a Scholar Advisor, this position will be responsible for student advising and the performance of a cohort of 60-70 high school juniors. Through group facilitation, workshops, community circles, class observations, and 1-on-1 advising, you will help Scholars develop holistically. Beyond ensuring students attend online classes and creating a rigorous academic environment, this position will be tasked with effectively building the socio-emotional (SEL) foundation to successfully navigate high school, college, and career, including but not limited to our Scholars’ academic mindsets, effective study habits, awareness of identity, and SEL skills.
- Lead and implement 11th grade SEO Scholars hybrid programming hybrid on Saturdays (online and in-person), after school (online), and during the summer.
- Develop content and best practices for advising and supporting 11th grade Scholars.
- Monitor attendance on Saturdays and follow up with Scholars and families regarding absences, lateness, and excused absences; lead Opening Circle (OC) with high-energy execution.
- Create and nurture an inclusive environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and college readiness.
- Provide appropriate socio-emotional guidance to all Scholars to ensure that they adhere to program policies and behavioral standards, and to support their successful completion of the hybrid program.
- Coordinate internally with SEO Curriculum & Instruction, Operations, and program teams to successfully plan and implement Opening Circle sessions on Saturdays.
- Conduct relationship building meetings for students and parents and meet with Scholars 1:1 or in small groups.
- Foster and maintain relationships with parents, school partners, volunteers, and corporate partners.
- Facilitate weekly/bi-weekly instructor check-in meetings to gather information about Scholar performance and advise on action plans to support Scholars.
- Collaborate with the Scholars Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) team and instructors to support Scholars successful completion of coursework.
- Monitor the performance and engagement of all Scholars in the assigned cohort; track and analyze scholar attendance, assignment completion, assessments, and grades in SEO Scholars’ classes, high school courses, and standardized test scores.
- Upload and update Scholar information into Salesforce for 11th Grade Scholar caseload, such as updating official program enrollment status.
- Leverage data to develop advising strategies that provide socio-emotional guidance, advising, and support to ensure Scholars’ successful completion of the program.
- Collaborate with 10th and 12th-grade staff to transition Scholars into and from the 11th grade each summer, ensuring preparedness for the college admissions process.
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and supervision of monthly in-person community days and other trips (e.g., college tours).
- Lead local college tours and plan a 3-day overnight college tour for all 11th grade Scholars.
- Support 11th Grade Scholars through the Summer Enrichment Program applications process, working with SEO EP Scholar team members to track progress on EP applications and acceptances.
- Support the SEO Scholars recruitment and admissions process by conducting interviews for prospective Scholars and participating in admissions deliberation discussions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, education, or another human relations field required.
- 2+ years’ public teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Direct experience working with high school-age students.
- Evidence of progressive career growth within roles increasing in responsibility and autonomy.
COMPETENCIES & SKILLS
- Background in student coaching and advising, including direct experience interfacing with parents and families and within communities reflective of SEO’s Scholar populationwith the combined lived and learned experience to effectively apply a genuinely empathic, and inclusive lens to both relationships and work product.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be comfortable communicating with SEO stakeholders throughout our community via email, chat, phone, or video conference. Able to clearly and effectively present content in a public forum, engage in active listening, and command the attention of large groups.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be practiced in building professional relationships and delivering constructive, honest and productive feedback to Scholars and family members.
- Strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that translates into successful accomplishment of program goals.
- Highly adaptable and solutions-oriented with an ability to solve complex problems even when faced with resource limitations.
- Excellent organizational skills, detail-orientation, and ability to multitask and handle changing priorities.
- Strong follow-through and accountability able to manage multiple responsibilities while meeting deadlines with minimal reminders.
- Working knowledge of standard workplace online applications (MSOffice, GSuite, Box.com); proficiency in Zoom and intermediate Excel. Salesforce and LMS experience is a plus.
- Bilingual Spanish/English is highly preferred; all languages skills are welcome.
