Salary Range: $240,000 - $300,000 per year

Summary:

The Trevor Project is the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization serving LGBTQ+ young people. In partnership with the Executive Team and CEO, The Chief Advancement officer will aim to ensure the Trevor Project has the financial resources needed to serve the large number of young people in crisis and expand the impact of its programs in the U.S. and Mexico. As a member of the Executive Team, this role will lead the organization in raising $40-50M+ in philanthropic revenue a year, implementing a multi-year fundraising growth plan, and executing large capital campaigns as needed. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) will be charged with creating and executing a fundraising strategy, inclusive of corporate and foundation relations, individual major gifts, multi-channel community giving, planned giving, and donor communications and marketing, as well as leading an  Advancement team of 30+ staff. They will collaborate with colleagues across the organization to develop a culture of philanthropy across the organization, including leveraging existing organizational relationships and identifying new potential sources of philanthropic support. In partnership with the CEO, the CAO will serve as a key organizational representative and brand steward, including having ownership of the marketing and creative functions.  The Chief Advancement Officer will significantly increase contributed revenue, earned revenue, high-impact partnerships, community awareness, and powerful connections with both Trevor’s existing stakeholders and emerging audiences. This role will be responsible for  developing a  strategy that will encompass diverse funding streams including major donors, community philanthropy, social or peer-to-peer opportunities, foundations, planned giving, government and corporate partnerships. It will also continue to build upon and strengthen Trevor’s brand as a thought leader and trusted resource in the LGBTQ+ community through an engaging marketing and content strategy that provides both value to our community and lays a foundation for future supporters.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, drive, and adapt annual and multi-year strategic fundraising plans to proactively advance the organization’s fundraising goals
  • Lead, develop, coach, and manage Marketing and Content teams, as well as fundraising teams in  Community Philanthropy, Foundations and Government Partnerships, Individual Philanthropy: Planned Giving and Major Gifts, Corporate Partnerships, and Development Operations
  • In partnership with other organizational teams, maintain and strengthen relationships with current donors and partners to increase gift size, frequency, and retention
  • Personally manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors, both individual and institutional, at the highest levels of giving capacity, move them through the stages of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and develop meaningful relationships within Trevor’s community of philanthropists.
  • Build consensus around Trevor’s philanthropic philosophy in alignment with the organization’s  mission and vision
  • Oversee marketing responsibilities such as organic social, paid media (social, search, OOH), SEO, email marketing, marketing strategy and operations, and brand management.
  • Oversee content development, graphic design, video production and post, animation, photography, and audio.
  • Partner with the Executive team to cross-functionally create annual revenue generation plans that include existing, renewable, increasing and expanding new streams of funding
  • Work closely with CEO and Board Chair to build a pipeline of competitive and diverse board candidates, and create a robust Board development plan that ensures Board members are trained to engage in donor cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Oversee the development of marketing and communication strategies that promote fundraising campaigns and elevate Trevor’s visibility as a leader in LGBTQ+ youth mental health
  • Provide strategic oversight on donor materials and external stakeholder communications
  • Develop, implement, and innovate strategies and execute plans that will markedly increase support of the annual fund, including major giving, legacy gifts, corporate and foundation support, fundraising events, membership, grants, and digital giving programs
  • Provide regular analytic reports for the CEO, CFO, Executive Team and Board of Directors that synthesize financial health and revenue forecast
  • Provide data for monthly and annual reports, and ensuring accountability and consistent and accurate budgeting for development activities
  • Continuously monitor and innovate the prospect management process to enhance  cultivation and solicitation activities for restricted and unrestricted revenue streams
  • Ensure strong departmental systems and processes are in place to support quality donor management, stewardship, and best-in-class fundraising practices
  • Ensure integration of the individual, corporate, and foundation prospect bases while leading and participating in prospect approach and strategy development
  • Oversee the organization’s grant and report writing, including coordinating the process with the appropriate internal stakeholders
  • Support the Executive Team and Board in appropriate fundraising activities and help drive robust results
  • Develop clear cross-departmental processes that foster collaboration and create an understanding of and appreciation for the development function
  • Set and implement annual fundraising goals and manage revenue and expense budgets
  • Set and implement special fundraising campaigns with CEO and Development team, as needed
  • Partner with and provide support for the Board Development Committee
  • Other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven success raising eight-figure fundraising revenue annually, as well as leading large capital campaigns
  • Strong track record  building teams, coaching for performance, and retaining talent
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective forward-thinking revenue-generation strategies and ensure timely delivery of revenue targets
  • A foundational understanding of creative workflows and core marketing functions, including how marketing campaigns are planned, developed, and executed.
  • Ability to effectively select, train, coach and provide professional development opportunities for a team of 30+ fundraising and marketing/content leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to secure  individual, corporate, foundation and government grants and donations of $1M+
  • The ability to maintain 40% travel independently to attend meetings
  • Comprehensive experience in all aspects of national fundraising campaigns including strategy, donor research, outreach, messaging, budget management, and donor cultivation
  • Excellent oral and written  communication skills required to facilitate reviews with executive stakeholders, Board, and senior leadership partners, clearly and concisely
  • Proven ability to manage financial and operational development data in partnership with finance team
  • Proven ability to drive large projects in a complex operational environment
  • The ability to build trust with colleagues, donors, partners, and board members
  • Proven track record and accountability in making quick decisions that have an immediate impact on business financials
  • Track record of developing a culture of philanthropy across an organization including engaging staff at all levels to actively support development-related goals and activities
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and closely with staff at all levels of the organization, inspiring and fostering external collaboration and partnerships
  • Demonstrated proactive problem-solving skills with a proven ability to multitask and work well within tight timelines
