Director, Internal Communications

We’re elevating our global internal communications strategy and vision. We’re looking for a strategic leader to guide us. As Director of Internal Communications, you’ll own the vision, strategy and execution of how we communicate to employees across the company, connecting 1,000+ Fastlyans to our mission, strategy, and each other.

This role will encompass global strategy, executive comms partnership, and people management. You’ll lead the function as a trusted advisor to the C-suite and business leaders, while growing a small but mighty team to help shape a cohesive employee experience that scales with our business. In this role, you’ll be a key partner to the Chief People Officer, supporting communications across all People initiatives. You will translate People priorities into clear, compelling narratives that resonate with employees globally, ensuring alignment, transparency, and a consistent employee experience.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design the strategic vision, approach and implementation of a global internal communications strategy aligned with Fastly’s business goals, culture, and values
  • Serve as a strategic communications partner to executive leadership, crafting narratives that inspire clarity and connection across the org
  • Lead and mentor at least one direct report, growing a high-performing internal comms team
  • Oversee internal comms platform and content strategy along with the editorial voice across our internal channels (intranet, Slack, all-hands, email, etc.)
  • Partner cross-functionally with People, Marketing, IT, Legal, and Workplaces to elevate the employee experience and information flow
  • Act as a trusted advisor to Senior Staff on strategic communications
  • Identify core messages by quarter based on business context and cascade expectations to senior staff and people leaders (for use in travel briefs, department all hands, and other internal speaking opportunities)
  • Stakeholder engagement for company and department kickoffs, all hands, and leader forums
  • Lead communications planning for key enterprise moments: change management, reorganizations, strategic initiatives, M&A, and executive transitions
  • Set frameworks and cadences for internal comms governance, measurement, and feedback loops
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, bringing fresh thinking to how we engage a distributed, global workforce
  • Support the Chief People Officer in developing and executing internal and external communications, helping to enhance her brand and effectively convey key messages to diverse audiences

What We’re Looking For:

  • 12+ years in strategic communications, with deep experience in employee/internal comms; experience at a global tech or high-growth company strongly preferred
  • Proven track record advising execs and managing communications in dynamic, fast-changing environments
  • Experience managing direct reports or building small teams; a leader-coach mindset
  • A skilled storyteller with excellent judgment and the ability to tailor voice, tone, and messaging across audiences
  • Skilled at navigating ambiguity, influence without authority, and working across silos to drive alignment
  • Proficiency with internal communication platforms (e.g., intranet, Slack, blogs, video, digital signage, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Business or a related field

We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:

  • Experience leading communications during large-scale transformation or organizational change
  • Background in employer brand, employee experience, marketing or HR communications
  • Familiarity with engagement or sentiment measurement tools and how to use insights to inform strategy
  • Global team support experience
