IT Manager

Job description

I am Frank, Head of Security & IT at Ashby

I started my career racking and running Linux servers, firewalls, and switches in data centers. I then switched to Corporate IT, where I helped several companies scale (e.g., Credit Karma, Lattice). I typically came in as the first hire and set up processes and teams. A couple of years ago, I decided to use the security knowledge I gained in Corporate IT and focus on Information Security for the remainder of my career.

After I joined Ashby, I implemented some tools and processes on the IT side that helped Ashby scale and its employees work more efficiently.

Now, I am looking for the first dedicated IT hire to join Ashby, be the primary contact for all things IT and continue the IT buildout. There will be some user facing support as well as work in the backend systems we use. I will still be around to help and provide guidance if asked, but I’ll trust you to take care of IT independently

I think it’s important to constantly reassess processes and tools as a company grows: what worked with 100 people and one hire a week does not work anymore with a company of 400 people with five new hires every week. Therefore, I am looking for a person who sets a high bar for their work and work of others, is responsive but also considers the long-term effects and challenges when addressing a problem.

It’s an exciting time to join Ashby! We have notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. Our growth and retention metrics are best-in-class among our peers: we have tens of millions in ARR, growing >100% year over year, very low churn, and many years of runway. We’ll share more details once we meet.

Role Requirements

  • Customer Service Orientation

  • Attention to detail but striving for execution

  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role, including 1–2 years in a leadership or managerial capacity

  • Experience scaling and managing an IT team at a fast-growing startup

  • Experience building foundational IT systems and processes that enabled a company to successfully scale.

  • Proven ability to support and improve IT operations in a remote environment

  • Familiar with working and troubleshooting in an international remote environment

  • Okta SAML, SCIM (ideally Okta Workflows)

  • Kandji or similar MDM

  • Apple Mac best practices

  • Google Workspace

You should apply if

  • You bring strong technical depth as an individual contributor, have experience in fast-scaling environments, and are excited about laying the foundation for a future IT team.

  • You’ve helped build out an IT function at a startup before, know what to expect, and are excited to do it again - this time with the benefit of hindsight and a clear vision for doing it even better

  • You are curious and want to learn new technologies and solutions

  • You want to provide phenomenal customer service but can also enforce rules and policies

  • You are constantly looking for improvements to the status quo

  • You like scheduling and managing tasks and projects on your own

You should not apply if

  • You’re not interested in being the technical lead or thinking strategically about how IT should scale with the company.

  • You prefer being part of a well-established team rather than shaping the function from the ground up as the first IT hire.

Interview Process

At Ashby, our interview process is designed to give you space to show your strengths and think through real-world challenges you’d face in the role. We aim for a collaborative and thoughtful process that helps you get to know us, and helps us understand how you approach your work.

Our interview process is three rounds:

  1. Initial Hiring Manager Screen with Frank (15 min)

  2. Experience Deep Dive with Frank (30 mins)

  3. Culture and End-User Fit Interview with the Recruiting Team (30 mins)

  4. A short Take Home Assignment to understand what you would prioritize when onboarding into a new role.

  5. Onsite Loop Pt 1:

    • Assignment Review with Frank (45 mins)

    • XFN interviews with People Ops and Customer Support (2x30 mins)

  6. Onsite Loop Pt 2:

    • XFN interview with Engineering (30 mins)

    • Meeting with Katie, Chief of Staff (30 mins)

    • Leadership focused interview with Abhik, VP Engineering (30 mins)

Each interview includes time for your questions, and we’ll share written prep so you know what to expect. Your hiring manager will be your point of contact throughout. If we don’t extend an offer, we’ll provide feedback!

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity.

  • 10-year exercise window for stock options. You shouldn’t feel pressure to purchase stock options if you leave Ashby —do it when you feel financially comfortable.

  • Twelve weeks of fully paid family leave in the US. We plan to expand this to employees in other countries as situations arise.

  • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget. Get what you need to be happy and productive!

  • $100/month education budget with more expensive items (like conferences) covered with manager approval.

  • If you’re in the US, top-notch health insurance for you and your dependents with all premiums covered by us.

Ashby provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.
