Job description

About Redwood Materials

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles and clean energy products, making them more sustainable and driving down the cost for batteries. Weโ€™re doing this by developing and deploying new technologies to increase the scope and scale of recycled and sustainable materials in the global battery supply chain.

Senior Trader, Battery Materials and Commodities

We are looking to add high-impact talent to our Business Development team at Redwood. This is an opportunity for a commercially driven leader to build and own a new function from the ground upโ€”serving as the vanguard of our next phase of growth.

In this role, you will lead the development of our trading and brokerage capabilities, managing the full lifecycle of buying, selling, and sourcing battery intermediate materials. You will oversee commercial activities for materials we produce, as well as materials we strategically procure for trading, with the goal of expanding our market presence and unlocking new revenue streams.

At Redwood, we recycle lithium battery materials from our manufacturing and recycling partners, refining them back into the critical minerals required for new battery cell production. This role will play a pivotal part in scaling that ecosystem, driving commercial opportunities across both our internal production and external market activities.

Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Drive Redwoodโ€™s lithium battery trading business as the central force connecting sourcing, operations, logistics, margins, and sales, acting as architect, strategist, and coordinator.
  • Ensure profitability and growth by innovating revenue streams, optimizing customer mix, and delivering a market-leading, sustainable service offering.
  • Own procurement economics by managing sourcing, operating, and logistics costs to secure profitable material flows.
  • Develop regional sourcing strategies and design tailored recycling and trading solutions for customers.
  • Identify and execute growth opportunities for Redwoodโ€™s trading and brokerage model, determining what to scale, where to focus, and which bottlenecks to eliminate.
  • Leverage data to drive decisions, building business cases, performing scenario analyses, and translating strategy into executable plans.
  • Collect and analyze market intelligence including pricing, market demand, and competitor insights; document all customer interactions in our CRM system.
  • Build deep industry expertise in lithium battery recycling, commodities trading, and battery materials to guide strategic and commercial decisions.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in buying, recycling, new business development, sales & marketing, procurement, or corporate strategy.
  • Industry expertise in batteries, battery materials, or battery metals (mining or recycling) is preferred.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data, identify gaps, troubleshoot issues, and convert insights into actionable recommendations.
  • Influential leader without formal authority, able to align and motivate cross-functional teams internally and build strong external relationships to achieve commercial goals.
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and resilient, with a bias for action, love for science, and the grit to tackle complex challenges.
  • Ability to thrive in high-growth, fast-paced environments, driving innovation while having fun along the way.
  • Passionate about sustainability and motivated by the mission to make a measurable, positive impact on the planet.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions in compliance with ADA, FMLA, and other relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including meeting both qualitative and quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance in line with ADA, FMLA, and applicable standards
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety gloves, helmets, and eyewear, or additional PPE when required
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the telephone, including listening and speaking

Working Conditions:

  • Office setting, manufacturing floor, outdoor job site, or remote work
  • Exposure to loud noise, extreme heat or cold, dust, fumes, or hazardous chemicals
  • Required to work weekends, evenings, or extended hours regularly
  • 25% of the time, occasional travel, or frequent travel for meetings, site visits, or events

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
