About Redwood Materials
We build large-scale energy storage systems and produce critical battery materials in the U.S. Our founder, JB Straubel, started the company in 2017 and left Tesla in 2019 to focus on Redwood.
We produce lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and cathode active material at scale, manufacturing components for advanced batteries. Our systems power data centers and the nation’s grid. We recycle end-of-life batteries to recover these materials, creating a domestic source. Redwood Energy designs, integrates, and deploys large-scale storage systems using new and repurposed batteries.
We partner with companies like Crusoe, Volkswagen Group of America, Panasonic, GM | Ultium Cells, Volvo, Amazon, Toyota, Southern Company, and BMW of North America. Collaborations with Isuzu (on recycling) and Caterpillar began in 2025.
We have two main campuses: the Tahoe Campus in Northern Nevada and the Carolina Campus outside Charleston, South Carolina. Each campus handles energy storage, recycling and refining, and materials production. Our R&D center is in San Francisco.
