Controls Engineer

Join Redwood Materials as a Sustaining Controls Engineer and play a critical role in supporting and optimizing our existing battery recycling and materials manufacturing operations. Help ensure our systems run efficiently, troubleshoot complex controls issues, and drive enhancements that make a real impact on sustainability and innovation.
Responsibilities will include:
- Maintain and improve existing automation systems by troubleshooting controls issues, updating documentation, refining panel designs, and implementing software and hardware upgrades to support reliable, efficient operations
- Drive uptime and efficiency by delivering expert maintenance and support for automation and electrical systems—advancing sustainable manufacturing through smart, reliable solutions
- Maintain and support plant control systems—including Siemens PLCs, Ignition HMIs, SCADA, vision systems, and OT networking—to ensure reliable and sustainable automation
- Partner with process engineering, facilities, EHS, maintenance, and operations to design and implement large capital projects that drive innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence
- Support risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards to uphold a safe, sustainable, and high-performing manufacturing environment.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in an automated manufacturing environment
- Strong understanding of process control design and feedback control strategies
- Ability to read, interpret, and edit P&ID and Electrical Schematics
- Exceptional electrical troubleshooting skills and the ability to terminate control wiring effectively
- Basic understanding of networking and fieldbus systems
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience with advanced control strategies, such as model predictive control (MPC) and advanced process control (APC)
- Familiarity with industry standards and best practices, such as ISA, IEC, and NFPA
- Experience with Siemens PLCs and Ignition SCADA system

Physical Requirements:
- Wear proper PPE when necessary
- Ability to safely perform job duties in both office and production plant environments
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
- Must be able to communicate clearly
Working Conditions:
- Office setting, manufacturing floor, outdoor job site, or remote work
- Exposure to loud noise, extreme heat or cold, dust, fumes, or hazardous chemicals
- Participate in on-call rotation to support automation and controls systems
- Infrequent travel required; less than 10%
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
