The Community You Will Join:
We are looking for a talented Data Scientist to join the Locations Data Science team. Locations are a fundamental part of multiple aspects of Airbnb. This team is responsible for investing and expanding our Locations data foundation, creating the intelligence around Locations data strategy, and building the data products needed to provide guests the location context they need to make informed booking decisions.
The Difference You Will Make:
As a Staff Data scientist on the Locations team, you will have the opportunity to help shape the data strategy of Locations at Airbnb. Your role will involve close collaboration with Product to identify user pain points that will inform new Locations features and Engineering to ensure our expanding data foundation is robust, scalable, and cost effective.
You will analyze and derive new location data products and features. This may range in projects from recommending places-of-interest based on traveler preferences, to generating neighborhood vibes and descriptions using LLMs, to modeling and discovering location affinities to name a few examples.
A Typical Day:
- Build a deep understanding of the locations space through technical analysis. Translate insights into impactful user-facing location data products or assets.
- Drive exploration, development, and prototyping of innovative location data products in close partnership with product and engineering stakeholders.
- Explore both internal and external data sources to derive impactful location assets.
- Quantify the impact of launched data products through experimentation and/or causal inference techniques.
- Research new approaches to measure items like location relevance and map behaviors to understand how they tie to user satisfaction and business outcomes.
Your Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in Data Science, Statistics, Geographic Information Systems, Econometrics, or a related field.
- 9+ years of relevant industry experience (6+ with a PhD).
- Prior experience working with geospatial data strongly preferred.
- Hands on experience using LLMs for information retrieval or knowledge extraction preferred. Related NLP, CV, UGC/content understanding experience a plus.
- Proven ability to effectively communicate and influence at various altitudes to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Prior experience working with XFN partners like product, engineering, and design to enable data-driven product development.
- Familiarity prototyping, building, and scaling derived data assets.
Your Location:
This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.
Pay Range
$194,000—$240,000 USD
