Your Role:

The Tax Director plays a critical role in ensuring the company’s tax compliance and optimizing tax strategies. This position will lead all aspects of the company’s tax function, including income tax, sales and use tax, and other indirect taxes. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and experienced tax professional with a strong understanding of US tax laws and regulations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Direct Tax:
    • Oversee all aspects of federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including:
      • Reviewing and filing corporate income tax returns.
      • Managing quarterly and annual tax provision calculations in accordance with ASC 740.
      • Reviewing disclosures for GAAP financial statements.
      • Reviewing complex tax calculations prepared by third party tax preparers.
      • Assessing and reviewing quarterly estimated tax payments and tax return extensions.
      • Responding to tax notices and inquiries from taxing authorities.
      • Managing tax audits conducted by federal, state, and local authorities.
      • Coordinating with external auditors and tax consultants to ensure timely and accurate tax filings.
      • Compiling annual and quarterly information for third party tax preparers.
      • Oversees tax planning initiatives, including the identification, calculation, and documentation of the R&D tax credit and the tracking of bonus depreciation.
  • Indirect Tax:
    • Evaluate and determine nexus for US entities.
    • Coordinate necessary registrations for sales and use tax.
    • Oversee sales and use tax compliance.
  • General:
    • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
    • Serve as the primary contact for auditors, external tax advisors, and tax authorities.
    • Manage any related inquiries or audits.
    • Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, assess their impact, and communicate necessary changes in strategy or procedures to leadership.
    • Provide tax related guidance and consultative direction to internal stakeholders.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Tax or Accounting required. Master’s degree in taxation is highly preferred
  • CPA required
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of experience in corporate tax
  • General working knowledge of employment/payroll tax regulations
  • Strong understanding of US federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations
  • Experience with ASC 740 and GAAP financial reporting
  • Proven ability to manage complex tax projects and deadlines
  • Experience in Agricultural and Manufacturing industries
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., D365) is a plus.
  • Ability to travel 20% for company meetings, team gatherings and onboarding trips

At Vital Farms, compensation decisions are dependent upon a variety of factors, which may include, but are not limited to, skill level, experience, education, training, market demands, and business needs. A reasonable estimate of the current starting annual base salary for this position is $170,000 - $190,000. Please keep in mind that hiring at the maximum end of the range would not be typical in order to allow for potential continued future salary growth.
