Job description

The AI startup Xayn develops Noxtua, Europe’s first sovereign Legal AI. Noxtua helps lawyers analyze and draft legal documents and research legal questions while being legally competent and compliant. Hosted in the EU, Noxtua meets high standards of confidentiality in handling client data, professional secrecy (e.g. Section 203 German Criminal Code, Section 43e German Federal Code for Lawyers), and European data protection. Noxtua is powered by specialized proprietary AI models. The models are trained with high-quality legal data provided by the Legal AI Alliance which the tech startup Xayn initiated with the international business law firm CMS. This makes Noxtua the secure, independent, and specialized European Legal AI.

The Berlin-based AI company Xayn was born out of research at Oxford University and Imperial College London by Dr Leif-Nissen Lundbæk and Professor Michael Huth. Founded in 2017, Xayn’s academic vision remains, with a workforce comprised of approx. 30% PhDs. The startup has received investment funding of 19.5 million EURO from Global Brain Corporation, KDDI Open Innovation Fund, Earlybird, and Dominik Schiener.

Mission & Vision

As a User Researcher (m/f/d) at Xayn, you’ll take ownership of building and scaling our user research practice from the ground up. Your insights will play a key role in shaping our Legal AI product, ensuring we truly understand our users and build solutions that solve real-world challenges in the legal industry. This is a strategic and hands-on role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment and wants to make a lasting impact on how legal professionals work.

Your Team

You will work with our two cross-functional product teams, collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and other designers. The team consists of 6-7 developers, a product manager, and a designer, who you will support with your deep customer insights and in validating their Designs.

Your Hiring Manager

You will report to Ruth, Chief Product Officer at Xayn, who leads the product and design strategy for Noxtua, our Legal AI solution. With extensive experience in product management and user-centric design, Ruth is passionate about creating intuitive and impactful digital products. She fosters a collaborative and agile work environment, ensuring that design, engineering, and product teams work seamlessly together. Ruth values user feedback, accessibility, and innovation, making her a strong advocate for human-centered AI solutions.

Your Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead user research operations, including research processes, documentation standards, and a participant panel.

  • Design, plan and conduct deep qualitative research studies (e.g. interviews, contextual observations, diary studies).

  • Collaborate with product designers, engineers, product managers, and legal experts to validate product ideas and improve UX.

  • Build and maintain a research insights database to ensure knowledge is accessible and actionable across the team.

  • Create and maintain personas, customer journeys, and other research artifacts.

  • Bring user insights into the product development process and identify opportunities for innovation.

  • Help define the strategic direction of our Legal AI by understanding and articulating what really matters to our users.

  • 3–4+ years of experience as a User Researcher, preferably in a B2B SaaS or regulated industry (e.g. FinTech, Legal Tech).

  • Proven experience conducting research independently, from scoping and recruitment to synthesis and communication.

  • Strong command of qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, diary studies, observations, and usability testing.

  • Experience building research ops and knowledge management systems.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills — you know how to bring people along on the research journey.

  • High level of self-organization and the ability to drive research initiatives proactively.

  • Working hours: Flexible working hours: Full-time (32- 40h/week).

  • Vacation: 26 days + December 24th & 31st off

  • Remote: 100% remote work possible (given a German residence), other countries upon request

  • Discounts: e.g. Urban Sports Club Membership
