Title: Database Performance Specialist

Location: Remote

Duration: 6+Months Contract

Salary: Open (INR).

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Database Performance Specialist with strong expertise in PostgreSQL and PgBouncer to support our team on a 4–6 month remote contract engagement. You will be responsible for ensuring optimal database performance, improving efficiency, and supporting mission-critical environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth PostgreSQL performance tuning, including query optimization, indexing strategy, and resource tuning.
  • Configure, optimize, and maintain PgBouncer connection pooling in production.
  • Monitor and analyze database metrics to identify bottlenecks and performance issues.
  • Troubleshoot slow queries, locking/blocking, replication lag, and transaction contention.
  • Implement or refine database architecture for scaling, HA, replication, and failover.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to improve schema design and application database interactions.
  • Create automation for performance monitoring, analysis, and recurring maintenance tasks.
  • Document best practices, configurations, and performance recommendations.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years hands-on experience managing and optimizing PostgreSQL in production environments.
  • Proven experience with PgBouncer configuration, tuning modes, sizing, and troubleshooting.
  • Expert-level SQL performance tuning and understanding of PostgreSQL internals (planner, optimizer, WAL, MVCC).
  • Experience with monitoring tools such as pg_stat_statements, pgBadger, Prometheus/Grafana, or APM tools.
  • Strong understanding of replication, HA strategies, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Experience working in Linux-based server environments.
  • Ability to work independently and deliver results quickly in a contract setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud-hosted PostgreSQL (AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, etc.).
  • Knowledge of connection pool architectures in distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with automation tools (Ansible, Terraform) or scripting languages (Python, Bash).
  • Experience supporting high-traffic, low-latency systems.
