Job description

The Intercept, launched in 2014, is an award-winning digital news organization delivering unflinching investigative journalism that unearths injustices and holds the powerful accountable. Our journalists are committed to fearless reporting and speaking truth to power: essential elements of vibrant, inclusive democracies.

The Position:

A full-time, salaried position, the Development Officer supports the development team by managing development communications, leading major donor research and prospecting efforts, and supporting the major giving pipeline through donor relationship development, stewardship, and solicitation.

The Development Officer is part of a small but mighty team and will have a range of responsibilities in a fast-paced work environment. Tasks will include detail-oriented administrative and research work as well as high-touch major gifts fundraising. While the ideal candidate has experience being a front-line fundraiser, we’re particularly interested in candidates who are comfortable multitasking, have sophisticated research and communication skills and excellent attention to detail, and possess a true passion for our mission.

In collaboration with other business and editorial staff, the Development Officer will contribute directly to reach our ambitious fundraising goals and ensure that a major digital news organization is sustainable for years to come. This position reports directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and will work closely with the senior leadership team. While primarily remote, the position may require some travel and evening/weekend responsibilities to be successful.

Development/Major Gifts

  • Collaborate with the Chief Philanthropy Officer to conduct prospecting and establish robust engagement plans for stewardship and solicitation of members and prospects, with the goal of adding to our pipeline of major giving supporters and increasing giving levels;
  • Establish efficient wealth screening process to identify first-time donors with significant capacity for an alternative engagement strategy using existing CRMs (Salesforce and ActionKit) and wealth screening tools (iWave);
  • Collaborate with the Business Coordinator to ensure data hygiene of development pledges and gifts;
  • Event leadership: in-person & virtual event logistics implementation when needed, coordination with event project manager, and post-event analysis;
  • Manage campaigns and campaign resources, including the annual report and regular mailings.

Data Management & Documentation

  • Create and manage donor database reports with the CRM systems (Salesforce and ActionKit) to support major-donor fundraising goals, collaborating with Membership and Product teams to use analytics in order to ensure data integrity and accuracy in reporting.
  • Manage internal development documentation, including the Development Handbook.

Background & Qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience is required.
  • Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Respect and passion for The Intercept’s investigative mission, and knowledge of its place within the wider media landscape.
  • Proven meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Proven strong research and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities on long- and short-term deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle sensitive information and manage confidentiality.

Excellent benefits include:

  • Medical
  • Vision
  • Dental
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Flexible PTO
  • Remote work setup

We are an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status ; we are committed to a diverse workplace, and to supporting our staff with ongoing career development opportunities.
