Job description
Job Title: Finance Executive
Location: Remote, UK
Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Reports to: CEO
Level: Entry to Mid-Level
Salary Range: £30,000 – £38,000
The Role 🚀
We’re looking for a sharp, motivated, and detail-oriented Finance Executive to take ownership of our day-to-day finance processes and support operational excellence at Vable. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a minimum of 3 years of accounting and financial experience to work closely with the CEO, develop new skills, and grow within a high-growth SaaS company.
You’ll be responsible for everything we do in Xero, from reconciliations and VAT submissions to management reporting and payroll, while gaining exposure to broader finance operations and strategic decision-making. With the right attitude, curiosity, and attention to detail, you’ll thrive in this role and be mentored to expand your responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
💰 Financial Operations (Primary Focus)
Bookkeeping and bank reconciliations in Xero
Data accuracy: costs, revenue input, VAT, and payroll in Xero
Management reporting (Xero/Futrli)
Liaison with external accountants
Accounts payable/receivable tracking
Year-end and audit support
🛠 Operational Support (Secondary Focus)
- Drive process improvements across tools (Slack, Gmail, Google Workspace, Monday.com)
- Manage shared inboxes
- Support People operations (e.g. payroll, pensions, onboarding)
- Contribute to ad hoc people and ops projects
About You 💡
Personality & Soft Skills
- You’re hungry to learn - not just about finance, but how a business works. You ask great questions, seek out better ways of doing things, and never settle for “that’s just how we’ve always done it.”
- Your attention to detail is second nature - you take pride in getting things right, spotting what others might miss, and seeing how the small things add up to big impact.
- You’re an excellent communicator who can explain finance clearly and simply.
- You thrive in a team and believe in shared success, not ego.
- You’re curious, proactive, and ready to take ownership from day one.
Essential Experience & Skills
- 3+ years in a relevant finance / accounting role.
- A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field is helpful but not essential - we welcome candidates with relevant experience or alternative learning paths.
- Hands-on Xero experience (or similar financial software).
- Comfortable with digital tools and quick to learn new systems.
Nice to Have (but not required!)
These aren’t dealbreakers - but if you have some of the following, they’ll help you ramp up faster and add value from day one:
- Part-qualified (e.g. ACCA, CIMA, AAT) or working toward a qualification is a plus, but not required. We care more about your attention to detail, initiative, and willingness to learn than your exam status.
- Experience in a startup or SaaS environment – You’re comfortable with change, ambiguity, and lean processes, and you understand the rhythms of recurring revenue and subscription models.
- Working with data or reporting tools(e.g. Power BI) – You’re confident building or interpreting dashboards, and turning data into actionable insights.
- Exposure to budgeting or financial modelling – You’ve supported or built simple models in Excel/Google Sheets to help others make decisions.
- Cross-functional collaboration – You’ve worked closely with teams like People, Ops, or Product, and understand how finance intersects with the wider business.
- Process improvement mindset – You’re not just a doer - you love finding smarter, more efficient ways to get things done.
- Basic knowledge of UK accounting or tax rules– You don’t need to be a qualified accountant, but a working understanding helps.
🎯 What Success Looks Like in This Role
- You consistently deliver accurate, timely financial data that builds trust and enables smart decisions.
- You proactively flag issues or ideas - even the ones outside your immediate responsibilities.
- You’ve made noticeable improvements to how we operate by asking “why?” and suggesting better ways of working.
- You’re becoming a go-to person not just for finance tasks, but for clarity and calm under pressure.
🚀 Growth Path
At Vable, we believe in investing in people who are curious, driven, and ready to grow. This role is designed with progression in mind. You’ll receive mentorship from the CEO and other members of the leadership team and you’ll collaborate across departments - giving you visibility into the wider business and opportunities to shape our finance function.
Here’s what your journey might look like:
- 0–3 months: Master core financial operations, gain confidence in Xero, and contribute to monthly reporting and compliance. You’ll be trusted to run most finance processes with increasing autonomy.
- 3–6 months: Take ownership of VAT, payroll, and management reports. Begin improving processes and identifying cost efficiencies. Build cross-functional relationships across People, Ops, and Tech teams.
- 6–18 months: Progress into leading on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning. You’ll work with leadership on strategic decision-making and help shape Vable’s financial future.
Progression isn’t tied to time alone - it’s about your impact, mindset, and growth. You’ll have regular check-ins, support with your professional development, and the chance to carve out your own path at Vable.
Our Values 💚
We are:
- Kind and Empathetic – We assume the best in people.
- Always a Team – We hold each other accountable and support one another.
- Curious – We ask questions, plan thoughtfully, and challenge the status quo.
- Ownership-Driven – We focus on results and love the details.
Why Join Vable?
- Purpose-driven work in a profitable, growing SaaS company with a 20+ year history.
- Mentorship from the leadership team and exposure to cross-functional teams.
- Annual L&D budget, remote office setup allowance, and healthcare benefits.
- A team that values your growth, autonomy, and well-being.
⚠️ Why This Role May Not Be for You
We believe in transparency and want you to thrive in the right role. This role might not be the right fit if:
- You prefer highly structured environments with rigid processes already in place - we’re still evolving ours, and you’ll be helping shape them.
- You need constant direction or close supervision - we’ll support you, but we’ll also expect you to take ownership and figure things out.
- You’re uncomfortable working across multiple tools and contexts - we rely on digital systems (Xero, Slack, Google Workspace, Monday.com) and expect comfort switching between them.
- You aren’t comfortable working in ambiguity or adapting to change - startups move fast and sometimes shift priorities.
- You’re not keen on rolling up your sleeves and jumping into the detail - this is a hands-on role where no task is too small if it helps the team succeed.
- You struggle with remote work – our team is fully distributed, and this role demands strong self-motivation, communication, and comfort operating without a physical office or daily in-person interactions.
We’re looking for someone who’s motivated, curious, and resilient - someone who thrives in a flexible, remote-first environment and values autonomy as much as accountability.
Interview Process
- CV, Cover Letter + short application questions (30–60 minutes).
- One-way recorded interview (2-3 minutes).
- Live interview with Matthew (CEO) and Sarah (Head of People) (1 hour)
- Final interview with Matthew and a senior team member (1 hour)
Our interviews focus on your attention to detail, learning mindset, and how you approach real-world challenges. We’re not just assessing what you know - we’re interested in how you think and grow.
We record all of our interviews, with your permission. It makes it easier as we are globally distributed 🎥. We are an equal opportunities employer. All applicants will be considered for employment regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin or disability status.
⚠️ Please avoid AI-generated content in your application, we want to get to know you, not ChatGPT!
✏️ Side note for the application form 📝
We’d love to hear how you think, work, and solve problems. These questions help us get to know you beyond your CV.
- Limit each answer to approximately 200 words– we’re looking for clarity, not essays.
- Be specific – include real examples from your experience wherever possible.
- There are no perfect answers – we value honesty, curiosity, and practical thinking.
- Please avoid using AI tools to write your responses. It’s OK to organise your thoughts, but we want to hear your authentic voice and real-life experience.
These questions are a key part of our hiring process and help us understand whether we’d work well together. Thank you for taking the time!
