Manager

Job description

Description

Protect Democracy is seeking a Finance Manager to join our small, collaborative, and committed Finance team and help scale and strengthen the financial operations of a growing nonprofit. The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about our mission, oriented towards solutions, and adaptable amidst uncertainty.

Protect Democracy was formed in late 2016 with an urgent and explicit mission: to prevent our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. We have since assembled a team of 120+ experts who have served under Democrats and Republicans, and in the senior ranks of other nonprofit, political, or media organizations. Our team includes lawyers, policy experts, legislative advocates, media strategists, writers, data analysts, software developers, and more.

Joining our organization as the Finance Manager is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact on our democracy; you’ll play a critical role in ensuring Protect Democracy’s long-term sustainability and growth. Together with the Finance Director, you’ll support our fiscal health and strategy, work directly with team leaders and all staff to empower them to make sound financial decisions, and manage our annual budgeting process.

This is a remote position based in the United States.* The priority deadline to apply for this role is July 7, 2025; we will review applications received after that date on a rolling basis. If you meet most but not all of the criteria listed below and believe you’d be a great fit for the role and could grow into it, we encourage you to apply.

The Finance Manager will:

  • Manage our annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Finance Director, team leaders, and directors;

  • Collaborate across the org to build out financial analyses, reporting, and trainings/guidance, including detailed and accurate budget tracking, forecasting, and recasting;

  • Serve as the main point of contact for finance- and budget-related requests and questions from staff, including contract review;

  • Oversee cash management and support adherence to our investment strategy;

  • Support the Finance Director with multi-year financial planning and forecasting;

  • Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of our financial records, in coordination with our accounting team;

  • Identify and implement internal controls, operational improvements, and best practices to increase financial health and effectiveness;

  • Supervise our facilities portfolio, which includes several offices and coworking spaces across the country;

  • Proactively assess needs and recommend systems, tools, or process enhancements.

Requirements

The ideal candidate brings:

  • At least 7 years of experience in financial management or operations, with a focus on finance;

  • Proficiency with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);

  • Experience managing budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes across departments;

  • A strong track record of improving or scaling internal systems and policies;

  • Comfort navigating organizational needs in an impact-driven environment with an eye toward sustainability and compliance;

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • A collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented approach;

  • A growth mindset, comfort for giving feedback in all directions, and enthusiasm to work across lines of difference;

  • A commitment to the nonpartisan mission of Protect Democracy and to building a more resilient, inclusive democracy.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience working in non-profit finance;

  • Experience using Sage Intacct or Martus Solutions.

Compensation The starting salary range for this role is $112,200-$125,000, commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience, capabilities, and skills, and in alignment with internal equity. We expect candidates with the required number of years of experience to be at the lower end of this range, and candidates with significantly more years of experience than is required to be at the higher end of the range.

About Protect Democracy

  • * Flexible location. We are a remote-first organization based exclusively in the United States, meaning our staff work within the U.S. and primarily virtually. We also offer shared workspaces for those who enjoy working in an office environment. We are established for remote work in many states across the country, and while candidates based anywhere in the U.S. are welcome to apply, we may not be able to offer employment in your current location. If you proceed with the hiring process, we will discuss where you currently live and what is possible during the hiring process. All staff are also required to travel at least twice per year to team retreats, and this role may involve additional travel to meet with partners, vendors, or for planning meetings. (Accommodations to this requirement will be made only in exceptional circumstances.)

  • Commitment to an inclusive workplace. Protect Democracy is an equal opportunity employer. We believe that a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences strengthens our ability to analyze problems, craft solutions, and drive meaningful change. Protect Democracy encourages applications from all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, national origin, marital status, citizenship, disability, or veteran status.

  • Phenomenal benefits. Our benefits package includes generous sick leave and a flexible vacation policy where we encourage team members to take on average 4-5 weeks off each year, and offer 12 paid holidays, 6 weeks of paid family and medical leave, and 18 weeks of paid parental leave. We also offer a 401(k) plan with up to 6% employer match that vests immediately, full coverage for an excellent health care plan that includes dental and vision insurance, long-term disability and life insurance, and a home office stipend.

  • Ample opportunities for personal & professional development. Candidates who do not meet all listed criteria should still apply, as our organizational structure focuses on mentorship, support, and long-term growth.

To apply

The priority deadline to apply for this role is July 7, 2025. To apply, please complete the application linked below. You’ll be asked to upload your resume, cover letter, and answer a short questionnaire. In your cover letter, please respond to the question: “Why does Protect Democracy’s mission resonate with you, and how does it align with your personal or professional values?” You’re also welcome to highlight any relevant experience you bring to this role. Applications missing any required materials will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Important notes

  • Contact [email protected] if you require specific accommodations at any point in the hiring process.

  • Keep an eye on your promotions/spam folders to avoid missed communication.

  • We are unable to provide status updates for each application we receive. If you reach out and do not hear back, please know it is not for lack of appreciation or interest, but simply for lack of staff capacity to respond to individual inquiries.

  • Final candidates for this role will be subject to a background check, in accordance with applicable laws.

  • The application will include a voluntary EEO survey so that we can monitor the applicant pool as a whole for representation and equal employment opportunities, and to evaluate our progress as an organization toward a diverse and inclusive workforce, which we believe is a pillar of a thriving democracy. The categories used by the EEO survey are limited and may not reflect your lived experience; please feel free to opt out of any of the questions. Your responses to this survey are entirely separate from your application materials, are not accessible to those responsible for hiring decisions, and will not affect your candidacy in any way.
