Description
Protect Democracy is seeking a Finance Manager to join our small, collaborative, and committed Finance team and help scale and strengthen the financial operations of a growing nonprofit. The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about our mission, oriented towards solutions, and adaptable amidst uncertainty.
Protect Democracy was formed in late 2016 with an urgent and explicit mission: to prevent our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. We have since assembled a team of 120+ experts who have served under Democrats and Republicans, and in the senior ranks of other nonprofit, political, or media organizations. Our team includes lawyers, policy experts, legislative advocates, media strategists, writers, data analysts, software developers, and more.
Joining our organization as the Finance Manager is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact on our democracy; you’ll play a critical role in ensuring Protect Democracy’s long-term sustainability and growth. Together with the Finance Director, you’ll support our fiscal health and strategy, work directly with team leaders and all staff to empower them to make sound financial decisions, and manage our annual budgeting process.
This is a remote position based in the United States.* The priority deadline to apply for this role is July 7, 2025; we will review applications received after that date on a rolling basis. If you meet most but not all of the criteria listed below and believe you’d be a great fit for the role and could grow into it, we encourage you to apply.
The Finance Manager will:
Manage our annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Finance Director, team leaders, and directors;
Collaborate across the org to build out financial analyses, reporting, and trainings/guidance, including detailed and accurate budget tracking, forecasting, and recasting;
Serve as the main point of contact for finance- and budget-related requests and questions from staff, including contract review;
Oversee cash management and support adherence to our investment strategy;
Support the Finance Director with multi-year financial planning and forecasting;
Ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of our financial records, in coordination with our accounting team;
Identify and implement internal controls, operational improvements, and best practices to increase financial health and effectiveness;
Supervise our facilities portfolio, which includes several offices and coworking spaces across the country;
Proactively assess needs and recommend systems, tools, or process enhancements.
Requirements
The ideal candidate brings:
At least 7 years of experience in financial management or operations, with a focus on finance;
Proficiency with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
Experience managing budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes across departments;
A strong track record of improving or scaling internal systems and policies;
Comfort navigating organizational needs in an impact-driven environment with an eye toward sustainability and compliance;
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
A collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented approach;
A growth mindset, comfort for giving feedback in all directions, and enthusiasm to work across lines of difference;
A commitment to the nonpartisan mission of Protect Democracy and to building a more resilient, inclusive democracy.
Preferred, but not required:
Experience working in non-profit finance;
Experience using Sage Intacct or Martus Solutions.
Compensation The starting salary range for this role is $112,200-$125,000, commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience, capabilities, and skills, and in alignment with internal equity. We expect candidates with the required number of years of experience to be at the lower end of this range, and candidates with significantly more years of experience than is required to be at the higher end of the range.
