Job description
Location: Remote, must be Australia based
Reports to: Head of Platform
Team: Site Operations (SREs and Backend Engineers)
Why Midnite?
Midnite is a next-generation betting platform that is built for today’s fandom. We are a collective of engineers and designers who all share a passion for building the best sportsbook & casino experience possible, allowing our fans to feel closer to the games they love through the rush of winning money.
Unlike the alternatives, Midnite doesn’t feel like a website built two decades ago. Instead, it’s a cutting-edge creation, designed and constructed from the ground up with the latest technologies. Crafting an experience that’s truly intuitive, immersive, and immediately understandable is no walk in the park, but we thrive on the challenge. We believe we’re on the brink of creating something truly awesome.
About the role:
Weʼre looking for an experienced Lead Site Reliability Engineer to establish and lead a new Site Operations team responsible for the 24⁄7 operational reliability of our systems. You’ll be joining us as the first Midnite representative on the ground in Australia, an exciting milestone!
This team will work closely with our existing Platform and Backend Engineering teams to ensure Midnite is always up, fast, and resilient - no matter the time of day. This is a critical leadership role aimed at scaling our incident response, on-call capabilities and the site reliability engineering function globally. Youʼll be hire number one in this team, allowing you to define, build, and scale the function that ensures we can detect, respond to, and resolve incidents promptly, providing world-class operational support as we grow. This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role where the stakes are real: youʼll be the person people rely on when things break, and the person they respect when things improve. Expect to be challenged and rewarded in equal measure.
What Youʼll Do:
Define, build, scale and lead a Site Operations team of SREs and backend engineers.
Design and implement a global on-call strategy (possibly a hybrid in-house and contractor mix).
Drive improvements in observability, alerting, incident management, and postmortem culture.
Collaborate closely with the Platform and Backend teams to ensure production readiness, reliability goals, and smooth handoffs.
Help hire talent in complementary time zones (e.g., Americas or APAC) to enable true 24⁄7 support.
Define SLAs/SLOs in partnership with product and platform engineering.
Own key infrastructure reliability KPIs and lead remediation efforts proactively.
Lead operational reviews and manage the process for ongoing improvement in incident response.
What Weʼre Looking For:
- Proven experience managing SRE or Ops-focused engineering teams in a high-availability production environment.
- Deep understanding of incident management, including building and leading effective on-call rotations.
- Calm under pressure: when incidents happen, youʼre the person who leads the charge, not just reacts.
- Strong systems thinking mindset; understands how infrastructure, code, and people interact under load.
- Youʼve not only kept complex systems running - youʼve improved them. You likely build better tools than the ones you inherited, especially in Python.
- You believe Infrastructure as Code isnʼt optional - itʼs the default. Declarative, repeatable infrastructure management is in your DNA.
- A strong, informed stance on tooling and architecture - youʼre opinionated because youʼve earned it through experience, not guesswork.
- Youʼve moved beyond legacy stacks - Ansible and EC2 are fine, but you know thereʼs better, and youʼve implemented it.
- You come from the software side of the house - youʼve written, shipped, and supported production systems, and your approach to SRE is grounded in real engineering experience, not traditional IT ops.
- Experienced with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, ECS, RDS), observability stacks (e.g., Datadog, CloudWatch, Sentry), and CI/CD pipelines.
- A collaborative, async-native communicator who thrives in distributed teams across time zones.
Nice to Have:
- Experience working in betting, gaming, or other regulated real-time systems.
- Experience scaling globally distributed engineering functions.
What’s in it for you:
- Shape our future: Play a key role in our team’s success, where your voice matters, and you’ll have a direct impact on shaping Midnite’s future.

- Transparent compensation: We provide competitive pay with clear team bandings and salary grids, ensuring that salary discussions are simple and fair.

We aim to provide an inclusive and supportive interview experience for all candidates. If you require any reasonable adjustments, please let us know in advance so we can ensure you feel comfortable and set up for success.
