What You’ll Do

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sustainable Data Center Design Manager to lead sustainability-driven design initiatives across our data center portfolio. This cross-functional role sits within the Data Center Operations team but will collaborate closely with Corporate Sustainability (which includes energy procurement and waste management) to ensure alignment with our long-term energy, carbon reduction, and resource efficiency goals.

The focus of this role is on embedding sustainability into data center design, ensuring that projects integrate onsite renewables, energy efficiency strategies, low-carbon materials, water conservation measures, and alternative refrigerants. The successful candidate will drive cost justification, technical evaluation, and implementation of solar, battery storage, grid interactivity, high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems, and lifecycle carbon analysis within data center projects.

Acting as the primary technical lead for sustainable design strategies, this individual will work closely with architects, engineers, sustainability consultants, and construction teams to ensure that sustainability best practices are incorporated from concept to construction.

Travel required to various data center sites and relevant industry conferences as needed.

  • Act as the bridge between corporate sustainability goals and data center design execution, ensuring that high-level sustainability objectives translate into practical, technically sound design solutions and to maintain and expand our use of 100% renewable energy across all facilities
  • Collaboration & Technical Leadership – Partner with MEP engineers, architects, sustainability consultants, and construction teams to integrate sustainable solutions into data center designs, ensuring they align with both engineering specifications and sustainability objectives.
  • Energy Efficiency Design – Lead efforts to optimize energy efficiency, integrating technologies like AI-driven predictive modeling, automated energy management systems, and smart grid capabilities for operational savings.
  • Onsite Renewables Evaluation – Conduct comprehensive financial modeling to determine project feasibility and ROI, including: capital expenditure analysis, operational cost projections, energy savings calculations, incentive and tax benefit evaluations, long-term sustainability impact assessments for solar PV, wind energy, and battery storage systems.  Develop strategies for integrating on-site renewable energy generation with grid-supplied renewable energy.
  • Grid Interactivity & Demand Response – Support design efforts on energy resilience, including peak shaving, demand response, and microgrid capabilities that support the local grid.
  • Lifecycle Carbon Analysis – Conduct carbon lifecycle assessments of design options, helping to identify and implement strategies that reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Water Conservation Design – Participate in developing designs for water-efficient systems, integrating renewable-powered cooling technologies and exploring innovative solutions like rainwater harvesting and closed-loop water systems.
  • Sustainable Materials & Construction – Recommend the use of sustainable, low-carbon building materials and ensure compliance with green building standards such as LEED.
  • Alternative Refrigerants – Research low-GWP refrigerants and other sustainable HVAC solutions that reduce the environmental impact of data center cooling.
  • AI & Automation in Design – Utilize AI tools and automation technologies to optimize building designs for energy efficiency, water conservation, and operational flexibility.
  • Sustainability Certifications – Ensure designs meet or exceed the requirements for certifications like LEED, WELL, ENERGY STAR, and other green building standards.
  • Construction Oversight – Support Construction and Commissioning teams for sustainable design elements, ensuring compliance with both design specifications and sustainability targets.

Investing in our people is one of our top priorities, and we value candidates who can bring their diversified experiences to our teams. Here are some qualities we’ve found compatible with our team. We’d love to talk about whether this aligns with your experience and Interests and what you’re excited to work on next.

Who You Are

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in Renewable Energy, Sustainability, or related field. A degree in a STEM field is a plus.
  • Experience – 5+  years in data center design, renewable energy integration, or energy infrastructure development.
  • Technical Expertise – Strong knowledge of solar PV, wind, battery storage, microgrid integration, energy efficiency systems, water conservation, and grid interactivity.
  • Financial Analysis Skills – Experience in cost justification, energy project ROI analysis, and incentive programs for renewable energy and sustainability initiatives.
  • Sustainability Certifications – LEED Accredited Professional or equivalent preferred.
  • Project Management & Construction Oversight – Ability to manage the implementation of sustainable solutions from design through construction and commissioning.
  • Communication Skills – Ability to present technical and financial analyses to executives, engineering teams, and regulatory agencies.
